South Summit won game 5 9-S3. Garfield Lads Among Top Scorers at Cage Tourney Two Garfield County boys were in the top ten scorers of the Class 1-A state basketball tournament last week. Martin Ramsay, Bryce Valley led all the state tournament scorers with 91 points in the four games. Jeff Owens came in fifth with 74 points. The other eight top scorers of the tournament were: 88 Tim Veter, Green River; 84 Travis Simpson, North Sevier; 79 Carl Harris, East Carbon; 69 Randy Kerr, Milford; 69 Rich Robinson, North Sevier; 68 Dave Lefler, South Summit; 68 Greg Hill, Gunnison; 67' Curtis Jensen, Gunnison; 67 Tony Magann, Dugway. South Summit finally was able to shed its runnerup label and prove the third time around sometimes can be a lucky charm. The Wildcats led by the Woolstenhulme twins, Wendell and Kendell, took the state 1-A prep basketball championship trophy back to the land of Kamas with a 57-49 victory over the North Sevier Wolves at the BYU Marriot Center in Provo, Saturday. For South Summit, it was their third attempt at winning the "big one" and this time it wasn't about to slip away. The Wildcats had lost previously to Gunnison for the title in 1972 and 1974. While Bryce Valley and Panguitch came in sixth and eighth respectively, they still played some good games. Bryce Valley came out of the tournament with a record of 23 wins and only three losses. Region 8 players started the State Tournament the first day with all the teams except Panguitch winning. As the games unfolded they did not continue as lucky as they started. North Summit won consolation honors with a 46-34 victory over Panguitch. North Summit led 32-28 at the end of the three quarters and then played defense. The Braves put on a sticky man-toman defense, then switched into a zone which caused the Bobcats all sorts of problems. Panguitch scored only six points in the final quarter, and were held to only two field goals. Jeff Curtis scored a pair of field goals and Kent Pace added a pair of free throws to give the Braves a 38-28 lead with five minutes remaining. Curtis finished with 12 and Pace had 10. High-point man for Panguitch was Jeff Owens with 14. Gunnison, behind the clutch shooting of Greg Hill, captured third place with a narrow 63-57 win over Bryce Valley. The loss Jeff Owens t dropped the Mustangs to sixth. Hill led the Bulldogs with 20 points. Gunnison led 16-12 after the first quarter and increased its margin to 39-30 at intermission. Bryce Valley came out in the second half paced by the outside shooting of Martin Ramsay and Monty Twitchell to pull the Mustangs to within three, 48-45, to start the final quarter. Hill, and Curtis Jensen responded to the challenge with a couple of quick hoops to begin the quarter and the Bulldogs were off and running again. Ramsay led all scorers from the field with. 21 points in a losing effort. Twitchell had 12 and playmaker guard Klin Chynoweth 14. On the first day's opener, Bryce Valley, and South Rich played. Martin Ramsay popped in 25 points for the victorious Mustangs as Bryce Valley edged South Rich 67-64. Bryce Valley led 64-61 with 2:14 left before Ramsay and Klin Chynoweth sank two free throws to ice the game. Monty Twitchell had 16. Chynoweth had 9. Kent Argyle netted 34 points for the losers. Dugway disposed of Panguitch 57-46. The Mustangs had to fight off the stubborn Bobcats for the first three quarters before finally pulling away in the final eight minutes. Dugway outscored Panguitch during that stretch 13-6. Tony Magann led Dugway with 17, High-point man for the Bobcats was Jeff Owens with 18. Bryce Valley rode the torrid shooting of Martin Ramsay and Monty Twitchell to knock off defending champion Kanab 83-73 in Thursday's quarter-final round. Ramsay finished with 29 points and Twitchell netted 23. The Mustangs hit their first 10 of 15 shots from the field to open up a 22-15 first quarter lead. The Mustangs increased the margin to 46-30 at halftlme. Bryce Valley, however, had to cling on to its lead from the free throw line late in the game. Klin Chynoweth and Bart Smith sank seven free throws In the final two minutes to preserve the victory. Chynoweth was instrumental in the Mustang's victory with his pin-point passing and playmaking. The Mustangs also dominated the boards. Panguitch found things to its liking Thursday with an easy 69-56 win over Park City. Jeff Owens led the Bobcats with 22. Dennis Henrie contributed 15. Frank Marcclin and Mike Alvey each had 17 in a losing causa. |
