Show Senator Bennett Asks Treasury Dept. To Auction Off Hoard Of Round Dollars Senator Wallace F. Bennett said he would join in sponsoring a bill that would provide for the sale at public auction of standard silver dollars now held in the U.S. Treasury. . Senator Bennett said this action would assure that the profit which would accrue from such a sale could be used to solve the present coinage crisis. Recent events during which the silver dollars in the Treasury fell from $25 million to ' v $3 million In the space of'a, month are well known. It has become clear that hoarding and speculating have diminish- ed the supply of silver dollars. . But it is also clear that the Treasury should not let itself become involved in the same practice which it is trying, to prevent. Many of the some $3 million still in the Treasury arc apparently "Carson City" mint. These have a special, value above the normal value of the regular Morgan silver; dollars a coin collector's item in themselves. It is obvious that funds will be needed for an additional mint. Public auctions "called, for this legislation would help to raise a good share of sucb funds. |
