Show COUNTY AGENT'S NOTES By Harold Lindsay One problem that has been of concern to you folks is the care and management of lawns. Thero has been somo fungus disease, present in the grass at the Panguitch Cemetery as well as some private lawns. This problem seems to be taking care of Itself in most cases. If you sprinkle too often during the hot weather and add too much fertilizer this fungus disease will sometime appear as it has done the past few weeks. I have a few suggestions that I would like to give on lawn management, which if followed will aid in growing better looking lawns. It Is Important that we leave the grass at least 1V4 to 2 Inches high when we mow the lawn. We should mow often and not let the grass get too tall. Not more than one-half of the grass leaves should be removed at one time. Avoid frequent light waterings, especially during hot weather. Do not water before the grass begins to wilt, then soak the soil to a depth of G inches or more. This will develop a better lawn witit less water which we are all trying to do. If any fungus does develop, do not fertilize until the weather gets cooler. This is the time of year most of our lawns are starting to take on that light washed out look which comes with a nitrogen shortage. A well fed lawn has a deep dark green color. An application of Vt pound of ammonium nitrate or 2 pounds of a 5-10-5 fertilizer per 100 sq. feet will take care of the fertilizer needs. Any questions or problems you nvy have you aro Invited to contact our office. A very good bulletin is available on lawn care at the office. |
