Show EXPLOSION KILLED SEVENTEEN Six Hundred Cans of Powder Discharged Dis-charged and Every Workman is Blown to Fragments. Ogden, Utah. As the result of -a premature explosion of powder at Dovll's Slide, Weber canyon, seventeen seven-teen men were Instantly killed on Wednesday. The accident occurred at the works of the Union Portland Cement company. One of tho men wns Hugh McGuIre, the only American Ameri-can victim. McGulre was foreman of tho powder crow, all the members of which wero killed. The powder crew was al work in n tunnel about fifty feet long, three feet high and two and a half feel wido. Tho men were strung along this bore passing powder to McGuire, who opened the enns nnd prepared tho shot. About 200 cans of black powder, pow-der, each containing twenty-flvo poundB, wero exploded in the tunneli nnd 400 cans near tho portal. The explosion of tho 600 cans of powder wns terrific. Two men wero near the tunnel opening nnd the body of one of these wns blown a distance of 400 feet. For the rest, a verltablo volley of fragments of humnn bodies was sent out through the tunnel opening. |
