The Character Ball given at the hall last Friday night, under the auspices of the Garland Library and Gymnasium Board, was a very successful affair, both socially and financially. Tho hall was filled to its utmost capacity, over 100 characters being represented and many costly and unique charactrs wero nmone them. Spectators were numerous and were well pnld for coming out. Evory nation, kindred, tonguo and people from rast, west, north and south wero represented repre-sented aud considerable merriment was created by thoso who took parts of the "funny kind." Wo will not nltcmpt to go Into detail and mention each and every charactor and it would bo unjust to single out a few and give them special montion. All tho characters represented were well sustained sus-tained and all present had a jolly good time. Tho grand march, led by Uncle ,Sam and tho Goddess of Liberty, whs a pleasing fcaturo of the tho evening. Prizes wero nwarded tho two best characters char-acters as follows: Mrs. J P Pcatherstoue Japancsu lady best sustained character; David Dortnn, Dutchman best charac tcr, both in looks nnd actions. There were, however, 10 or 20 characters almost al-most equal to thoso who drew tho prizes and thu judges had tboir liHiids full to mako the fiual decision. The judges wero Mrs. SI J Itlchauls of Riverside, O G Aduev of Corinno and Mr, Hunter of Salt Lake City. During tho evening a finu lunch was served on tho stago. Tho total receipts were 80 and the expenses ex-penses $40 leaving a total of 40 on baud for the benefit of the Library Board. |
