Show Page 2 The Gazette invited all the candidates in Centerfield, Fayette, Gunnison and Mayfield to send a photo and write up of themselves explaining The Gunnison Valley Gazette their decision to run for office. Some candidates chose not to participate. Following are the candidates who accepted the invitation. Scott Hermansen Gunnison City Mayor I am currently serving as Mayor of Gunnison City. I have served since August 2003. Prior to this, I served as a council member beginning January 2000. I am a life long resident of the city. I am a local small businessman, a husband and a father of three. As Mayor, I have been accessible to the public at all times. I have a calm manner but yet deal firmly with city problems. I have been involved with all aspects of the city departments. I have a working understanding of the water, sewer, and pressurized irrigation systems. I have supervised the water, sewer, fire, and street departments, as well as the cemetery and park. I would like to continue as the Mayor of Gunnison City. I am vested in the completion of current projects - a new city hall, a new fire station and an extension of the sewer line near the cemetery for an industrial area. I am aware of the economic situation and will work for the best possible city government for Gunnison. I know that the gas leak in our town has affected many residents and businesses, and I will continue to see that it is cleaned up. Some of the future projects I would like to see done is upgrading the culinary water systems, building more culinary water system storage tanks, and try to revitalize and maintain the streets of Gunnison and the Gunnison City Main Street. I would like to see that Gunnison City is operating at its fullest and that its residents and businesses are satisfied. I urge you to get out and vote on November 3rd. Vote Scott R. Hermansen. Lori Nay Gunnison City Mayor I have spent most of my life in Gunnison and learned the importance of public service watching as the community stalwarts volunteered their talents each year and made a difference in this great community. It has been an honor to serve as a member of the Gunnison City Council for the past 8 years. Working with amazing volunteers who have made great things possible during my tenure has confirmed my belief in the adage, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” As a City official, I have been able to bring $3 million to Gunnison City in outside funding and services. With vision, outside funds and citizen involvement, many improvement projects were accomplished during my tenure, such as the Sanpitch Riverwalk and River Crossing, the beautification of the City Cemetery, the Sanpitch Dragon, the new Gunnison Valley Fire Department Fire Station, the Sesquicentennial Celebration, Tree City USA designation, and the expansion/improvements of the Industrial Park for A.C.T.’s development. Also, I have been a strong advocate for citizens affected by the Top Stop Fuel Spill and will con- tinue to work diligently for our recovery. To the position of Mayor, I bring expertise in grant-writing and funding, management experience, and working knowledge of the City and its infrastructure. My philosophy of teamwork and proactive management will efficiently manage the City’s resources and provide better solutions to our challenges. Most importantly as Mayor, I bring commitment, enthusiasm, and a vision for the future which includes a plan to beautify and revitalize our Main Street business district with outside funding. I will pledge the time and energy necessary to perform the duties of Mayor in a fiscally responsible and progressive manner. I ask for your vote on November 3rd. Jeremy Pickett Gunnison City Council My name is Jeremy Pickett and I have called Gunnison home nearly all my life, where I continue to live with my wife Angie and children Austin, Drayson, Brayden, and Cemryn. I have dedicated many hours to making Gunnison the best town it can be starting from an early age. I planted the high school football field for my Eagle Scout. When I was 16 I helped plant the trees on the highway, and have aided in several service and beautification projects. In 2000 I won the “Utah Outstanding Young Farmer Award.” In 2001 I served as Vice President of the Gunnison Jaycees. In 2002 I was elected President of the Gunnison Jaycees. In 2003 I started the Gunnison NFL Flag football league and have ran it successfully ever since. I have served on the boards for Gunnison Babe Ruth baseball the past 5 years, the Tri-county Football League, and there is a good chance if your children are between the ages 10-20+ I have coached them in either baseball, football, or church basketball. I want to see our city embrace organizations that will keep our youth headed in the right direction. Such as an ac- tual Gunnison Parks and Recreation program, more opportunities for our youth not just in sports but physical fitness, music, library activities and art (I also designed the logo that Gunnison City now uses and the high school football team logo). I want to see more businesses on our main street. As a council we need to “Market Gunnison” to make us more attractive for businesses to move here. I feel these two improvements among other things are vital to the future prosperity of Gunnison and it’s citizens. I would appreciate your vote for Jeremy Pickett, Gunnison City Council, on Nov. 3rd. Thank You. Trevor Powell Gunnison City Council My name is Trevor Powell. It is with great pleasure that I submit my name for election as a council member for the city of Gunnison. I am currently employed by South Sanpete School District and have spent the past 15 years at Gunnison Valley High School as a teacher and currently as Assistant Principal. Over the past several years, I have been involved in several service projects that have contributed to the enhancement in our great community: tiling at the river walkway, laying sod at Gunnison Park, and organizing the 4th of July games and auction. I have served on the Gunnison Valley Jaycees and held the offices of President and Vice President. I have been a volunteer coach for many sports in our recreation program. During my 15 plus years in the valley, I have had the opportunity to work with our youth and their parents and have been thoroughly impressed with their positive atti- tudes and willingness to serve this community. I want to continue this tradition and serve the people of Gunnison by building our youth programs and maintaining our current projects and look for ways to improve our great city. I am married to Angie (Miller) Powell and have three beautiful children; Malcolm, Madeline, and Mason. We grew up in small towns and have enjoyed living and working in the Gunnison Valley. Ryan Thompson Gunnison City Council My name is Ryan Thompson, and I am seeking your vote for Gunnison City Council. I have been a resident of Gunnison since I was born. I attended Gunnison Valley High School, graduating in 1992. I met my wife Chontae in 1992 while I was attending Snow College, we married in 1995. We have two beautiful daughters Tae’Lor (12) and Taryn (aka Scooby) (8). In the spring of 1998 I started my career at the Utah State Prison. In the fall of 2001 I graduated from the Utah Peace Officers Standards and Training and began working part time for Gunnison City Police Department. I now feel that the time has come for me to seek elected office. I want to bring fresh ideas and positive solutions to the city council. I am committed to the growth and vitality of this city and its families. At the heart of this is a belief that we must all work to build the economic underpinnings of the city’s businesses. Every business or citizen who pays taxes and employs workers and attracts money to our community helps to support our schools, police and fire departments, the park, the library and other public services which are essential to our community. It is time for a change and I want to be the voice this town deserves. My voice is your voice! I am vowing to continue to make Gunnison City the best place to raise a family. I am running for two main reasons, my family and yours. Elections are November 3rd. Remember to vote! Thursday, October 22, 2009 Darwin Jensen Centerfield City Mayor I have been married to Gwen Robison since 1972. We are the parents of three children and two grandchildren. I am a graduate of Snow College with about 130 additional credit hours in Business and Agriculture, and I am currently semi-retired. Three of the rewards I have received that mean the most to me are: The Governor’s Gold Key Award for Achievement, 1975; The Extra Miler Award from the Rural Water Association of Utah, 2008; and the Gunnison Valley High School Alumni Association Award, 2006. Some of the memberships and associations I am involved with are: Commander, Centerfield American Legion Post; Chairman, Sanpete Mayors and Commissioners Association; Governing Board Member of Six County Association of Governments; Member of Legislative, Membership and Finance Committees of Rural Water Association of Utah; Annual Training Speaker for Rural Water Association Spring Conference; and Bishopric member and volunteer at Gunnison Correctional Facility. My goals for mayor include completing the last part of the water upgrade for Centerfield, ensuring safe clean water for many years; completing the new park on 1st East; and completing the Old Rock Church Community Center. I hope to encourage small businesses to Centerfield. One of my goals is and always has been to represent Centerfield in a manner that when our State and Federal officials think of Central Utah, Centerfield will be at the fore of their thoughts and in a positive way. Thomas Sorensen Centerfield City Mayor I am running for the office of Centerfield Mayor. I was born and raised in Gunnison. I served a mission in Barranquilla, Colombia. I came home from my mission and married Candice Jensen and we are the parents of 5 children. We have lived in Centerfield for 16 years. I attended college at Snow and then UVSC. I later finished my education in Arizona where I received a degree in Respiratory Therapy. I have been employed as a Respiratory Therapist at Central Valley Medical Center in Nephi for the last 10 years. I love living in Centerfield and I want to be your new mayor. I have experience in city politics, I was a 4 year Centerfield Councilman from 2000 to 2004. I feel it is time for a change in leadership as the current mayor has been in office for 8 years. I feel like new leadership is important with new ideas and enthusiasm. As your mayor I have the time and energy to serve. I want to see major improvements on our roads and enforce our ordinances. I will listen to your concerns and try to resolve them. I will always work hard to do what is best for Centerfield. I would also invite any of you to either come to my house or call me with any questions or concerns that you might have. Please get out and vote for who you think will do the best job. Thank you. Nancy Jensen Centerfield City Council My parents, “Doc” and Ford Rees, moved from California to Gunnison when I was a year old. This valley has been my home base since then. In February 1942, my father closed the Gunnison Hospital and left the valley to serve as an army troop transport surgeon. My mother, my sister, Natasha, and I then moved to Salt Lake City where my mother worked as a nurse at the County Hospital. She would come home from work exhausted because this was during the polio epidemic, and she was applying hot packs to polio patients. When the war ended in 1945, we returned to Gunnison and my dad reopened the hospital. I graduated from good old GVHS and attended Snow College and the University of Utah. Then, the old “love bug” bit and I married my sweetheart, Eugene Jensen. We have lived most of our married life on the farm and know that this is the very best place to raise a family. No one ever dared to say that they’re bored-- mom and dad will find some work for them to do! We are the proud parents of Craig and Debbie Jensen, Hyde Park; Diane and David Hill, Centerfield; Valerie and Jim Rumpsa, Farmington; Norman and Eliza Jensen, Centerfield; Brad and Colleen Jensen, Centerfield; and Janell and Owen Braithwaite, Centerfield. We currently have 23 grandchildren (one deceased) and 32 great-grandchildren. Being active in the church and politics, and just completing 16 years as a board member of the South Sanpete School District has kept me out of mischief, I think! I love to travel, read, ride my bicycle and have family “get-togethers” with our kids. This valley is a wonderful place to live and I am grateful for the many opportunities we all have. LIFE IS GOOD. Candidates are continued on the next page. |
