Bulldogs head into playoffs by ANDY HILL With a home playoff game hanging in the balance, the Gunnison football team headed east on Friday night to battle with Grand High School. The Devils, who were tied with the Bulldogs and the North Summit Braves heading into the game, were also hoping to gain the home field advantage in the last game of the season. On paper it appeared that this would be a battle to the end. But as many times happens in sports, one team jumps out quickly and does not look back. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, this would be a night dominated by the home team. In the first half it was all Dallen Dalton, who rushed for two scores and finished the game with a team high 174 yards and three TD’s, who gave Grand the early lead. The Bulldogs added a touchdown in the second on a five yard run from Cutler Frandsen to close the score at 20-6. But the Devils quickly responded on a 17 yards pass from Billy Ked- dington to Erik Wemuth. That score, which closed out the half, gave Grand a solid lead at 27-6. In the second half, Grand’s running game, which accounted for more than 350 yards of offense, continued strong for the Devils. This time it was Billy Keddington who took over, rushing for a total of 163 yards and two more touchdowns. Gunnison did add one more score in the third quarter on a 1 yard blast by Brogan Neal, but by that time, the damage had been done and Grand collected the solid home win 41-14. With the loss, the Bulldogs who will finish in the 2A North #6 spot, will make the short trip over the mountain to battle with the Millard Eagles, who finished 7-2 on the season. The Eagles finished in a three-way tie in the 2A South Region, lost a flip and ended up in the #3 spot. The winner of the game will travel to Kamas to battle with the South Summit Wildcats. Friday’s game will be played at Millard High School with kick off time at 6 PM. Cari Hansen/Gunnison Valley Gazette Rayel Sorensen and Maddie Powell block the ball and score a point for the Bulldogs. Great passes, blocks and serves by CARI HANSEN by MITCH PETERSON The Gunnison Lady Bulldogs and South Summit Lady Cats staged a great soccer game in Kamas last Wednesday, October 14th, in the first round of the 2A state playoffs, but those darn Cats escaped with a 2-1 win. Gunnison controlled the action most of the game and played hard to the end. Karen Orozco scored for the Bulldogs while BrieAnn Peterson went the distance in goal. Megan Jensen led the defense with some great tackling. The Cats play on an artificial surface, and the ball doesn’t behave like it would on real grass. Despite that, Gunnison had some early scoring chances. In the 24th minute, Sarah Nilsson sent a corner kick to the front of the Cat’s goal. Fekirte Deskins got a knee on the ball and found Jensen, who headed it inches over the crossbar. Just two minutes later, Breanna Young combined with Deskins, Nilsson, and Cristina Mayorga on another close call. The Bulldogs kept up the pressure. In the 28th minute, Deskins passed to Nilsson and she shot it just wide left. It was Gunnison’s third quality scoring chance in four minutes. But the Cats took advantage of some kind bounces to take a 10 lead in the 30th minute, and that’s how the first half ended. The second half was more of the same, with the Bulldogs seemingly just a pass away from tying it up. Then the Cats broke free and grabbed a 2-0 lead in the 50th minute, while the Bulldogs continued to work. As the game went along, the Bulldogs sent more and more players forward and it paid off in the 66th minute. Karen Orozco found some space on the right side of the field and fired a hard rightfooter to the back left corner of the net for her second goal of the year, cutting the Cat’s lead to 2-1. The final 14 minutes of the match were intense as the Bulldogs kept up the pressure. But the whistle finally blew and the Cats had the 1-0 win to advance. In addition to the players mentioned above, Brissa Orozco, Gabi Gomez, Mari Gomez, and Heather Matthews also started for the Bulldogs. For Gunnison head coach Jaron Jensen, it was a bit of a frustrating day, but a great overall season. “We controlled the tempo today, so the final result is disheartening,” Jensen said. “I hate to go out like that, but it was a good year. I’m proud of these girls. They fought hard. They were passing it around. South Summit was chasing them most of the time. That’s what we wanted. We just couldn’t finish. They did great,” Jensen added. “It’s been a fabulous season.” If the Bulldogs could have come up with a couple more regular season points, it would have meant a first round game on their home grass. “It’s hard when you have to travel this far and play on a different surface,” Jensen said. “If this game’s in Gunnison, I really believe we HEAP WEEK of the Mitch Peterson/Gunnison Valley Gazette Gunnison junior midfielder Heather Matthews (15) closes in for a tackle during last week’s playoff game against South Summit in Kamas. win it. That shows you how key the regular season is.” The Bulldogs had some nice wins during the year. They swept Grand and South Sevier, and beat Manti for the second straight time. Seven seniors move on, but there are plenty of young players. “We’ve got a lot of girls that are ready to step in and play,” Jensen said. Four juniors return, including Breanna Young. Young says it’s disappointing to lose, but she’s proud of her team. “We played way good,” Young said. “Everyone was working together. The defense did great. They were always there and they passed it ahead well. This has been a pretty great year,” Young added. Breanna’s teammate and fellow junior, Heather Matthews, says she just tries to help the team and do her best. “It’s jon warren such a thrill when you’re out there, playing as hard as you can. I love it,” Matthews said. “It’s sad that it’s over, but it was such a great season. It was so much fun.” Young had praise for the seniors. “We’re going to miss them a lot,” Young said. “Each one of them has a certain technique they’ve helped us with.” Matthews agrees. “The seniors are a blast. They are so awesome. We’re going to miss them,” Matthews said. Last week proved to be a rough week for the Lady Bulldogs. The team started off the week losing to South Sevier on their home court and then traveling to San Juan only to get beat there as well. Even though the team wasn’t able to pull out a win at either meet, the girls showed great improvement in their teamwork and skills. On Tuesday against the Rams, Gunnison had a 97% serving record, only missing one serve throughout the entire night. Cami Carlisle, Sara Brown, Maddie Powell and Kayli Frandsen led the team in scores. Cami finished the night with 4 kills and 12 perfect passes. “Sara was our outstanding digger this game,” says Assistant Coach Carlisle. “She also had 8 perfect passes.” Maddie Powell had 3 kills and 3 blocks, and Kayli Frand- sen ended the night with 2 kills and 3 blocks. When asked how the team did Thursday, Coach Carlisle explained, “The team worked really hard and hustled against San Juan but were just simply outplayed. Our Varsity serving was just outstanding though. They served 96% of their serves, only missing one serve in all three matches!” Kayli Frandsen had a great night earning 4 blocks with 6 hits and no errors. Maddie Powell had 3 blocks, and Sara Brown scored with 3 kills. Cami Carlisle kept the ball in play with 12 total hits, 2 of which being kills. The team finishes out their region play this week against North Sevier Tuesday night and then again at home for their senior night on Friday against Grand.
