Show Page 8 The Gunnison Valley Gazette by CARLIE FREDRICKSON 6th Grade I have seen first hand what drugs do to you! I can tell you right now that it isn’t healthy nor pretty! Drugs do disastrous harm to your body. Drugs are also very addictive. It is like when you have a Double Chocolate Chip ice cream cone—you first take just one lick. You think, “Hey, that’s not bad; in fact, not bad at all.” So you take a couple more licks and suddenly you’re hooked and can’t do anything about it! All the rest of your life you’ll always have that ice cream cone there—staring at you! A stunning number of people die each year because of drug use. I say we shouldn’t have to die. Therefore, we should never have that one itty-bitty lick that just might ruin your life. Drugs mess your head up, your body, and the people around you! All these reasons are why I can say with a clear mind and heart that I elect to be drug free. by ALEXANDRA STAFFORD 6th Grade Drugs are not good for you. It can hurt your heart, lungs, breathing, and thinking. You will start doing all kinds of stuff to hurt your body. You will not stop. That would not be good. Sometimes divorces are made. You will be all by yourself. Your wife and kids will leave because your wife doesn’t want the kids doing that kind of stuff. If you don’t stop now, you can lose everything. You can even lose yourself too. So stop right now or pay the hospital for lung cancer and all of the other things that will hurt you. So stop and don’t lose everything. P.S. Throw away your lighter and all the packs of cigarettes. It is your decision!! by KYLIE NAY 6th Grade Drugs are a part of life you don’t need. Why, they make you go crazy, make you smell, and make it so people don’t want to be around you. Here are some examples for you: • Fred smokes. He goes to play and the little boy sitting next to him says, “You smell bad.” Fred is now embarrassed that he smokes. • Bob drinks. He goes out for a drive, he wrecks, gets accused of drunk driving and is sent to jail. Now you can be Fred and Bob, or you can be the people who don’t do drugs and who live a happy life. It’s your choice. In my opinion I think the people who do the bad drugs are not too smart and they have a hard time getting drugs out of their life. So don’t do drugs! by WYATT NIELSON 7th Grade What does it mean to be drug free? Drug free means staying away from all kinds of drugs. Tobacco probably causes the most deaths on average in a year. Second hand smoke is probably worse than you smoking the cigarette because the smoker has it filtered; you do not. I know because my stepdad smokes cigarettes. Remember—never use drugs!! by JOEY CARLISLE 7th Grade Drugs are very bad Drugs are very horrible Drugs can make you mad Drugs make you unadorable Drugs addict you Even though you don’t want them to A drug can kill more than one brain cell They even make your clothes smell Drugs waste all your money And your friends don’t think it’s funny Drugs make it so you can’t breathe Don’t do drugs, it would be a relieve Drugs are terrible, they hurt your body It’s a crime that’s very naughty Don’t do drugs like marijuana and meth Very easily they can cause death by BRAYLIE PETERSON 7th Grade Drugs are not all bad. If you are sick, they may help you get better. It is when you use them the wrong way, like when you get addicted to them, you may do some stupid stuff. Some of the drugs are alcohol, cigarettes, nicotine, and maybe some that the doctor prescribed. So you see, drugs are everywhere we go. I had an experience with drugs not too long age. It was at my bus stop. Every day when I went to the bus stop this kid took out a cigarette and lit it up. Whenever a parent or somebody drove by he would quickly hide it, so nobody would know. All the other kids kept quiet about it, but not me. I told my dad every day he did it. One day my dad came to the bus stop, talked to him, and told him if he smokes in front of his kids, he would possibly throw him in jail. He went to an authority who can write a ticket, and if the kid does it again all I have to do is tell my dad. So, like I told you, drugs are almost always in everyday stuff. Stay away from getting too much drugs. by AUSTIN PICKETT 7th Grade When you elect you choose what you want. Drugs are something people do and get addicted to. The biggest danger is when you get addicted and can’t stop taking the drug; it may even get so bad you steal or do anything just for some sort of drug. If you get caught, you could go to jail for an unpredictable amount of time. I don’t have any experience with drugs although about three years ago my grandma smoked. I used to go to her house 24/7. I knew it was bad for her health, so I told her I didn’t want to come to her house until she stopped smoking. About a week went by; she called my mom and said she wasn’t going to smoke anymore. I was excited for two reasons: first—I could go over to her house without the smell; second—I knew my grandma was safe from drugs. Now my grandma can afford a new house and she has more nice things because of her stopping smoking. She is also a happier person. by BARBRA WEBER 8th Grade I elect to be drug free because I have seen what they can do to people—like steroids. Someone I know did steroids. He played college ball and everyone on the team was doing them so he started-- and once he started using steroids they became addicting and he kept wanting to get bigger and bigger, but now he is less active and very unhealthy. People might not think it’s dangerous, but it can be addicting just like other drugs—tobacco and meth. I saw what drugs did to him, so that’s why I choose to be drug free and influence other people to do the same. by DREW HOLDAWAY 8th Grade Drugs—they make all the difference. Did you know that people who do drugs will probably die before those who don’t? Hundreds, maybe thousands of people die every year because of drugs. Have you ever smelled the breath of somebody who smokes or drinks? It is repulsive! Many smokers lose their teeth. My great-grandpa was a former sheriff of Minersville who busted many drunk drivers and drug cases. When my grandfather died, his house went up for sale, and some people bought it and started selling weed, cocaine, and marijuana. Once my dad found out, he went to the new sheriff about the drugs. The people who were selling got sent to jail for 18 years. When my father told me, we were right in front of the house. Later we went to the grove and dug a small hole and put my greatgrandfather’s favorite pistol in it and buried it. by TRAVIS CARLISLE 8th Grade Are you excited to go into high school? Your answer was probably yes. Well, don’t get too excited. During all of your high school years, you will probably be asked if you want to do drugs. If you are, then tell them no, because drugs are dangerous things! Here is a good example. One time while watching a movie, I saw this group of friends at a party. They had alcohol at the party. The friends laughed and played games all night long. After the party two of the boys started to go home. While driving along, the driver slowly drifted to the opposite TV. I love to be active and play sports. I’m addicted because I play sports so much I can’t stop. That’s what addiction is— once you start, you can’t stop. So don’t let drugs get into your life. I hope drugs don’t come into my life because they can do bad things to your body and could cause death. So, if someone asks you to go have a smoke, just say no and stay away. I elect to be drug free. (Limited Area) That’s why I elect to be drug free! by BONNIE SCHARF 8th Grade They kill, drive people mad, and they kill your brain. You might think it’s a poison or a toxin—it’s worse—it’s drugs! Most people, as children, think smoking and drugs are bad, but they don’t know what might happen in the future. They could start smoking or drinking before they’re out of middle school. Jocks in high school could use steroids to make themselves feel stronger. Some girls could use slim cigarettes to make themselves thin. Well, I for one, think it’s repugnant! One reason children begin to smoke or use drugs is because of peer pressure. Peer pressure is when someone is gaming you on. “Try it!” they say, “It won’t hurt just to try it once!” And the next day, you smoke a whole pack of cigarettes. I knew someone who couldn’t go a day without smoking 10 packs of cigarettes! It is insane! Not even an advanced smoker would do that. But he got over it. My dad knows him well. I just wish he wasn’t so old looking. He’s only 39, and he looks like an old man. It’s creepy! by MATT MECHAM 8th Grade Drugs—one time and you’re hooked. This is a true story. A girl I know had an addiction to drugs. She used heroin, crack cocaine, and cigarettes. She was doing these horrible things behind her mom’s back. She also got addicted to pain medications. In no time she was selling drugs on the street. She sold drugs like balloons of heroin, cocaine, and lots of illegal drugs. Her addiction became worse; she was using up all of her money to buy drugs. She was never home; she was always on the go. She was shooting up heroin from her foot. She thought she wouldn’t get caught, but she did, while she was swimming. Her mom sent her to live with her sister in Arizona. She is still there. She has quit her drugs, and now has a good job. Her drug use started with pressure from her boyfriend! by PRESTON JUDY 8th Grade October 31, 2111, was the day I made my decision to be drug free. It was a cold fall evening when my eyes were opened. My friend and I had been walking to the gym to play basketball when we heard sirens. It was the usual thing to hear in the city at this time of night, but these sirens were too close. We kept walking to the next turn, and there was a cop car. My friend lived close to here and ran to a hiding spot (I followed him). We sat there and watched as the cops dragged two boys out of an apartment. The boys were about 17 or 18 years old; only three years older than us. One boy was crying and saying he was sorry he gave in to all the peer pressure. My gut dropped and I knew right then I was going to elect to be drug free. by KARLA CHAVEZ 8th Grade “Come on! Try this, try that!” Has anyone ever asked you that? Don’t people know that tobacco and alcohol are bad for us? I know because I know some people that are addicted. They say, “Oh, I’ll just try it once,” but once they try tobacco they will be addicted to it, and won’t stop. Most people think that if they use tobacco they will be cool, but really what they are doing is killing themselves. I hate when people smoke because of the disgusting odor. I have seen lots of people smoke and drink alcohol. They don’t know the danger they are putting themselves into. When they use tobacco their teeth rot, and get yellow. They can even get cancer from it. BODY BARN Mon - Sat 5 am - 10 pm Closed Sundays 62 South Main Gunnison 435-528-5955 of the Free Delivery 57 South Main • Gunnison lane. A second car, with a young woman inside, was driving the other way. The girl wasn’t doing anything bad, just driving home from tennis practice. When she came over a hill, she was hit by the other car. Once they all got to the hospital, the doctor diagnosed that the two boys could go home with only some scratches. The girl had broken bones in her legs, and couldn’t play tennis for a couple of months. She was having a tennis scout come, and now she couldn’t play. This was all because of the two boys who had been drinking. So you see how drugs can affect other people’s lives too. The girl was the one who was mostly affected, and she didn’t do anything. Now—during high school, if somebody asks you to do drugs, just tell them no way! Drugs are horrible for my body! So—get ready for high school because somebody could ask you! by CIERA CHRISTIANSEN 8th Grade There sat the 19-year-old boy in jail, not for murder, but for choosing wrong and using illegal drugs. His parents would not suspect him of using something so life threatening, but they thought wrong. When his parents looked at him, all they would see is the redness in his eyes and his pale white skin. When he was eating his lunch he often would fall fast asleep without even finishing his meal. This boy would never come home at night; if he did it was late, after everyone in his house went to sleep. After realizing he hadn’t come home for a few weeks his parents began to worry. They tried everything to contact him, calling him, asking friends and family to ask if they’d seen him, but no one had. When calling him, his phone would ring and ring, but no one would answer. His parents would ask themselves, “Is he okay? Is he hurt?” They finally got a call from his boss. His boss told them the sheriff had been at his work. They searched his truck and him. The sheriff found two illegal drugs, marijuana and cocaine. He spent three weeks in jail for not electing to be drug free. Knowing this story, and how illegal drugs work, I am going to elect to be drug free. by COLBY CALDWELl 8th Grade I elect to be drug free. I don’t want any drugs to be in my life because when you take just one drink or one smoke you may not stop because you’re addicted. When I was little, I was addicted to candy and Play Station. I could never stop playing or eating because I was addicted. I have another addiction today—U always have to be doing something active! I hate just sitting around all day watching MEMBERSHIP PRICES Single Adult 19 & Older 16 - 18 year old 13 - 15 year old Couples Family (4) 62 & older HEAP WEEK Pizza • Calzone Breadsticks • Salad 528-3792 Thursday, November 6, 2008 Monthly $20 $15 $10 $35 $50 $15 Yearly $200 $150 $100 $350 $500 $150 Christina Mayorga Happy to Serve You Specialty Pizza’s: Chicken Alfredo• Philly Steak & Swiss• BBQ Chicken • Chicken Bacon Ranch Stix of all kinds: Bread Stix • Cheezstix • Pepperoni Stix • Hawaiian Stix • Cinnastix • Yummy Stix Lunchtime Special: Pizza by the Slice Lotsa Motsa Sports Calendar Basketball Nov 10, 11 & 12 • Try-outs in the New Gym • 6 - 8 pm ••• COUPON••• 1st Week of Month: $1.00 off 16” Specialty Pizza 2nd Week of Month: 1/2 Price Breadstix with order of 16” Pizza 3rd Week of Month: 1/2 Price Dessert Stix with 16” Pizza 4th Week of Month: Free small drink with Pizza by the Slice Lunch Special Happy to Serve You This week’s Heap of the Week goes to Christina Mayorga with car-poolers, Megan and Morgan Cejudo.
