Show Opinions Page 2 The Gunnison Valley Gazette Letters to the editor... Club News THANKS TO THE FIFTH GRADE TEACHERS I just want the fifth grade teachers to know that I’m very grateful for all the work they do to put on a fifth grade play! I went to see it this morning (It’s my third child’s turn to be in it) and thoroughly enjoyed seeing the kids so excited about their parts. My friend has a daughter in the show and her daughter has been calling it her “acting debut.” Many students who audition for the plays at the high school will fill in the “previous experience” blank on the audition form with which part they were in the fifth grade play. It’s more than a program, it’s a musical play, with solo songs and cameo roles for young budding actors. What a learning experience for the arts-not to mention the history these kids are going to remember for the rest of their lives. Thanks Mrs. Sorensen, for writing such a fun play that covers facts in a humorous and musical way. Thanks for keeping the tradition going for the new students coming up even though it’s so much work! Thanks Mr. Childs and Mrs. Childs for helping with all that work. Thanks new teacher Mr. Henry for jumping right in with support, and the “got me right where it hurts” line! You all did a great job and we love you for it! By HARRIET BAUMGARTNER None of us thought we’d live long enough to see a person of color make it to the White House. Thelma said just to see how far he came is a surprise to her. She wanted Hillary Clinton but that didn’t happen and she’s still disappointed. We asked her who she voted for and she wouldn’t say but we think we can figure it out pretty easy. It was a circus trying to get our voting done. Edgar picked us all up early and we got to the town hall and went in and they didn’t even have the machines working just right so we had to wait a few minutes. When Erma signed the book she signed it upside down and that upset her so she started to erase it and got into a tussle with the election judge. She finally had her way and signed it the way she wanted and when they gave her the Thur Nov 6 Hamburger w/Trimmings Potato Salad Chips Cookies Thursday, November 6, 2008 little blue plastic card to stick in the machine she put it in her purse with her recommend to keep it safe. But by the time she got to the machine, she’d forgot where she put it and one of the judges came over to help her and he asked her where the card was and she looked at him wondering what he was talking about and then she started arguing with them and it caused quite a ruckus until Ruby looked through Erma’s purse and found the card. The people waiting behind didn’t appreciate it one bit. It wasn’t too bad picking the names but all those other things that needed a yes or no were so confusing we all voted no on every one of them. Better safe than sorry, and if one of them passes we know our taxes will go up. Hazel said the dust won’t even be settled before some of these new winners will be all puffed up with importance and they’ll want to start doing things to make the world a better place and they’ll expect us folks on fixed incomes to pay the bill. She’s still mad over a new sheriff buying new badges right off the bat several years ago. She told us it takes more than a new badge to make a good cop and these young fellars today can’t hold a candle to Kennard and Gene Tuttle. Rose said there was a day when it didn’t take long to find the Republican in politics because he didn’t want to spend money, but Bush changed all that when the stock market went bad and he sent 700 billion dollars over there to buy time until he could get out of Washington. Most of us can’t even imagine what 700 billion dollars would look like if it was laying on the table. Edgar said he was in the bank last week and he heard Keith’s boy talking to an old fellow from Fayette who wanted to know what all these Wall Street folks were talking about when they said they needed a trillion dollars to get the economy back on track. He said when the guy at the bank wrote it out for him on paper the man just stood there with a goofy look on his face and then he asked if the government has that kind of money to lend out to these bankers on Wall Street who got the country into the mess in the first place. He didn’t hear what they said back. Helen said if Eugene Overfelt was over things at the treasury this never would have happened. He had common sense when it came to doing what’s right with money. Well, it will be exciting to see how the new president is going to save us once he takes over.
