Lady Bulldogs at state The Lady Bulldogs went to state October 26 at UVSC in Orem. They went up against Region 14's first seated team, North Summit. The morning started early for the girls with a team breakfast planned and served by the Senior Girls. They had an hour to spend with each other and get psyched for the upcoming competition. They left the school at 11:30 and by 2:00 they were ready to play. The Lady Bulldogs came out a bit shakey, and went down 10-1 early. A little pep talk and they rallied actually out scoring the North Summit Braves in this run by bringing the score to 19-11. They showed great teamwork and hard play time. The game went to a 25-15 loss for Gunnison. Second game, Gunnison started with the serve. During the game Candice Anderson had 2 good blocks, Jerrica Pickett a great slam and good block. Bailey slammed the ball to the braves hard, but the girls couldn't pull it together for a win. Score 25-11. Third game, Lisa's first four serves took the bulldogs to their first lead in the match. They were 0-4 when the next serve turned serve to the braves. The girls went on with their lead to 5-6, then they were unable to hold it any longer. They played the game hard against the first place team, but came up short with a 2516 loss to North Summit. They then had a break until 5:30 when they went up against the Region 13 third place team, Beaver. The first game the bulldogs came out strong. The game started with hard volleys and good play. We were close with score of 6-5, Beaver ahead. Then the girls slipped to 15-5. It seemed the girls were stuck on 5 and couldn't pull off. A good bump by Sarah, good save by Candice followed by a spike by Bailie and the girls took off from there. They held Beaver to 15 as they pulled to 10. Then Beaver pulled out again with three more points, we answered with three points on Sarah's serves and the score was 18-13. Bailie had a diving save and the ball went over, 19-14. The score went 23-18, 24-19 and final score Beaver won with 25-19. The bulldogs may have lost but they knew they were competitive. The second game started with Beaver serving. One point and the serve went to Gunnison, and Sarah served three points, 1-3 lead over Beaver. Bailie and Candice had a super double block. Sam later spiked the ball which tied the score at 4-4. The score went back and forth point for point. Lisa's serve put Gunnison up 11-" 12. The Bulldog s again was stuck on 12 as Beaver went to 20. Second game ended with a 25-17 win for Beaver, which is no indication of the first half of the game. The bulldogs played hard and teamwork was the name of the game. Third game was all Beavers. Gunnison went down 6-0 fast. Had a few good volley's but couldn't get into the game. They lost the game 25-4. The girls were on their way home early. They had a up and down year, but they never gave up. At the beginning of the championship game with San Juan and Salina playing, Candice Anderson and Lisa Bartholomew were recognized as being on this years 2A Academic All-State Volleyball Team. Both girls have excelled in Volleyball as well as in their Academics. The flag pole had weathered many storms with its large flag flying in the wind. The morning the pole broke, the flag was not flying. The sixty foot piece of the pole broke tree limbs and took down a power line as it fell. There were no injuries. He also helped Sam Judd build the skate park. He enjoys doing activities with the Youth City Council. Some of Taylor's hobbies include camping, eating, drawing, cooking, snow boarding. Football is what Taylor is mainly interested in, he loves every part of the game. Family is very important to Taylor, he wanted to thank his Dad for all that he has done to bring his family through such a difficult time with the loss of their Mom. Taylor knows that his Mom watches over him. He also wanted to thank his new family, Kelly, Taylor, Martee and Easton for putting up with him. COMPOSITE After careful consideration, we have unanimously come to the conclusion that the best candidate for Sheriff is Kevin Hoknan, Kevin has demonstrated that he not only has a vision for Sanpete County, but that he can deliver on that vision. Kevin is also very knowledgeable and educated In the areas necessary to complete and staff the new Sanpete County Jan facilities. Kevin started and taught the DARE program that helps our kids stay off drugs. In addition he brought us the resource officer at the North Sanpete School District, hazardous materials response and technical rescue teams. learns that Kevin organized and are now fully functional and equipped consisting of some of the highest trained responders anywhere in the State. He brought National Search and Rescue training to the Search and Rescue and has written the County Emergency Operations Plan. Kevin didn't do this because he was told, he did this because of his concern for the citizens of Sanpete* Chief Matt Draper (Sice) CtyjsfKevin Conover (Fire, EMS, SAJJ) Gunnison Valley High School would like to congratulate Lisa Bartholomew and Taylor Ashton for being selected by the Faculty and Administration to receive the Top Dog Award. Lisa Bartholomew is a senior at GVHS. She is the daughter of Scott and Lila Bartholomew of Fayette. Lisa has been very active in the community and at school. Lisa organized "Operation Crayon", to collect school supplies for Iraqi children. Lisa has always been very concerned about other people, she has collected blankets and teddy bears, and also made blankets for children that are in the hospital. She currently serves as the Young Women's President in her ward. School participation is very important to Lisa. She is a member of the National Honor Society, FFA President, past FFA Treasurer, and Reporter. She is also involved in basketball, volleyball and softball. Lisa was nominated for Wendy's High School Heisman Award, and was awarded the Freshmen Gatorade rookie award for basketball and also defensive player of the year for several years in basketball. Lisa was awarded the Academic Allstate Award for volleyball. Lisa has maintained a 4.0 cumulative GPA. Some of Lisa's hobbies include, hunting, reading, farming, being in the mountains and snowboarding. Lisa loves life and enjoys being with her friends. Congratulations to Lisa for receiving this award. Taylor Ashton is the son of the late Michelle Ashton and Brett and Kelly Ashton. Taylor is a very involved senior at GVHS. He is currently the student body vice president and a football team captain, He has been both a sophomore and junior class officer and involved in band, wrestling, basketball, baseball and track.
