Show The Gunnison Valley Gazette Page 4 Thursday, November 2, 2006 Hunting with Arno Living the Outdoor Lifestyle Gardener Village Gardener Village is the place to go if you like quaint, unique shops in a quaint, old-fashioned atmosphere. The main feature, and my favorite part of Gardener Village, was the old mill that has been renovated into a restaurant and country furniture store which winds up three stories of wood staircases, with rafters overhead set up around the old mill machinery. The Gardener brothers, Archibald and Robert designed the mill in 1850 and supervised its construction. The stone work on the west side driveway is original pioneer handiwork, which has never needed repairs since it was built 150 years ago. There's a monument of millstones that were shipped from England with Archibald Gardener's name and the names of his 11 wives. Nancy Long purchased the property in 1979. Her intention was to turn it into a house, but her retail experience, and a bit of "entrepreneurial spirit" led her to turn it into a furniture store that opened in the mid 1980s. Long opened Archibald's restaurant, which is also inside the mill, in 1990. It features four different dining rooms that show Archibald Gardener's life. The menu features "country fare with a flair." While young children are invited, parents, for obvious reasons, are cautioned to watch them dosely. The sign on the front door reads, "Untended children will receive a puppy and a free espresso." But if the 60 varieties of homemade fudge do not tempt you, there are "2,000 more square feet of sweet enticements." They even sell specialized items like bottles of Pumpkin Patch Cream Soda and Haunted House Rootbeer. Since then Long's husband, Chris Christenson, and her son Joe They sell Sen-Sen, Bottle Caps, Long (who is the current owner), have horehound, stick candy, Bubble Up, found, moved and renovated historic Grape Nehi and a dozen other kinds buildings to create the "village" with its of candies you can't find anywhere very own stream running through conelse, and, like me, probably haven't necting pathways beneath overhangeven heard of. ing trees. Some of the other shops are the All of the shops are old homes or other buildings that have been relocated to the spot and redone. For instance, the shop "Just Us Girls" which carries trinkets and things, porcelain dolls, custom journals, and all sorts of other things that are just for girls, is an old house that was located at 12738 Redwood Road in Riverton. It was relocated in 1990. "Sweet Aftons," the candy/fudge shop was the old Welby train station that used to be at 1860 West 12600 South. It sells 'temptation by the pound," in the form of homemade fudge, made right there in the store - where the smell of it will drive to buy. It has rows and rows of the old full sized witches, posed in hilarious positions from seated on a potty in the outhouse, to air traffic directors on top of the houses. On Nov. 17 through Dec. 26, the Elves will arrive at Gardener village. The "pointy-eared, industrious elves" will be all over the premises, tinkering away at their various projects. There is also a petting zoo, Barnyard Buddies, with pot-bellied pigs, goats and lambs, two rabbits and a few chickens. I loved the donkey best, even though it kept trying to eat my jacket, but my kids loved the pony rides. The pony rides are S3, and the petting zoo is S2. So get on 115 Northbound, and exit on 7200 South (Exit 297). Make a left just off the exit, and head westbound to 700 West. Turn left there and head south to 7720 South, which is Center Street, and then make a right and head west four blocks to 1100 West. - Rooster House, Window Box, Internal Affairs, Upon the Shelf, Twiggs and Moore Gallery, Protea Cottage, Motif Jewelry and Clothing, and several other restaurants. With nine children, thirty two grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren, Arno has a lot of people vying for his time. So, when he agreed to my proposal, I was pleasantly surprised! We applied for bear, buffalo, antelope and deer. As luck would have it, we were successful in obtaining general season deer tags, and nothing more. Undaunted, we immediately began making tentative plans for the upcoming fall activities. As winter turned to spring, and spring to summer, our fall deer hunting plans were temporarily put on a back burner. Other, more pressing issues took precedence, but as the days became shorter and the nights a little brisker, our thoughts again turned to deer hunting. Plans were made and maps were drawn. You Arno and I with Arno's buck. do this and I'll do that. I love the getting ready part of hunting. The anticipation of it all. As it turned out, the first morning Kerri and our grandson Koda hunted with Amo in a drainage not far from where myself, Logan, Ashley and Jebb were pursuing big bucks as well. Lexie felt a bit under the weather and opted for sleep rather than braving the elements with the rest of us. Along about mid-afternoon Arno and I finally met up for an evening hunt. Earlier in the day Amo had passed on a couple small bucks, opting to hold out for a buck he could clearly see antlers on without the aid of field glasses. Right away we were into deer, but unable to locate a shooter buck, we moved on. Just prior to sundown, from a vantage . point high above the valley floor, Arno and I spotted a group of deer feeding from their protective cover into an adjoining coulee. From atop our lofty perch it was clearly evident that one of the group had antlers. With that confirmed it quickly became a foot race with the evaporating sunlight. Down the rocky slope we went, until at about three hundred and fifty yards Arno stated this is close enough. With one well placed shot from his trusty model 721 Remington, in 270 caliber, Amo ended his 2006 deer hunt. Amo and I's deer hunt was pretty short lived, but that's alright. Within those few precious hours he and I created memories I will cherish for a lifetime.
