Show C3 The Emery County Review, Tuesday, July 22, 2008 CASTLE VALLEY PAGEANT Volunteers Echo Work Ethic of Pioneers Josie Luke For five years, organizers of the Castle Valley Pageant, held outside Orangeville had requested funding from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for a cast building at the pageant site, but when contractors’ bids were twice the amount the church granted, they were faced with the prospect of more waiting. As the Pageant President and a general contractor, Mark Justice, along with his counselors, Lee Jeffs and Kenn Christiansen, understood the church policy required a contractor for such a project, so with bids well over the granted funding level, the project seemed ill-fated. But still faced with such need for the building– the cast costumes filled a trailer, which had to be hauled to the site every year and stored on private property-- organizers submitted a unique approach to church leadership: Could they use volunteer labor? After much discussion, the request was granted. Now armed with permission, Justice’s contractor’s license and the knowledge of area residents’ willingness, the project has moved forward. Work on the 840 square foot building which will provide dressing rooms and costume storage for the cast began nearly a month ago, and volunteers are “working frantically” to complete the project before opening night, July 31. For Montell Seely, the creator of the pageant, the building’s design was important. As with other structures on the site, the cast building was designed to appear period-appropriate. The flat- roofed cement structure was built below ground level, making it possible to cover two sides and the top, so it will blend into the hill on which the pageant is performed. According to the pageant presidency, so far, over 50 volunteers from the church’s three stakes in the area have put in hundreds of hours of volunteer labor to complete the project, echoing the hard work of the pioneers portrayed in the pageant itself. Volunteers work to put in rebar on the new cast building at the Castle Valley Pageant site. Welcome To Castle Country! Welcome to the Emery County Fair!
