Montell Seely’s dream of a pageant to commemorate the pioneers who settled in Castle Valley began while he was serving in the Central Atlantic States mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Seely was assigned to labor on the Cherokee Indian Reservation in North Carolina, where a pageant was produced to tell the story of the Cherokee, a tribe who was forced off of their land and marched to a reservation in Oklahoma, but if they were able to escape, would return home to the Smokey Mountains. This story is known as the “Trail of Tears”. Seeley and his wife Kathryn would also take their family to the “Mormon Miracle Pageant” held each year in Manti. He revealed that when he saw the pageant he thought, “Boy, I wish somebody would put on a pageant over here to tell our story.” His chance came in 1978 with the development of the “Ward Activities Committee”. As the first counselor in the bishopric, the new cultural arts specialist, Carol Ann Driggs came to Seely and asked him what her responsibilities were.
