Namon Bills / Spanish Fork News GROUNDBREAKING: Representatives from Habitat for Humanity of Utah County join the Tukuafu family in breaking ground for their new home in Spanish Fork. Habitat provides second chance in SF Namon Bills KDI TOR Isileli and Michelle Tukuafu look a symbolic first step toward a second chance for their i'amily at the groundbreaking of their new home in Spanish Fork. Saturday, May 30. The family will build the home ia conjunction with Habitat for Human- ity. Habitat has been in Utah County for almost 18 years. They've built 36 homes in the county; this will be the third one in Spanish Fork. Michelle Tukuafu said at one point she and her husband decided to take a financial risk and move to Hawai'i. Things didn't work out the way they had hoped, and after ex- periencing what Tukuafu called "financial disaster," they wound up in Utah County. "We got here looking for a place to live. ... Everything was too expensive," she said. The family finally settled in a mobile home in Springville, but with seven kids ages 5-18, it was hardly an ideal situation. They 199 MKrlM «" ning to help work on other Habitat homes as well. "It's not required," she said, "but I want to." Jeremy Johnson, board president for Habitat for Humanity of Utah County said the Tukuafus have been good to work with. "We've had a great relationship with them so far," he said. "They're a wonderful family. They'll be a great benefit to the city." Tukuafu said they're ready to begin the building process, and they' re looking forward to getting involved in Spanish Fork. "We're just really excited to get started with this," she said. "We want to contribute to the community. We're really looking forward to being a part of it." The Tukuafus will put in 500 hours working on their new home, which is all part of a payment plan they can afford. They will also take classes in home maintenance.
