Jamie Voorhies, a firstgrade teacher, said, "The grant that we so graciously received from the Nebo Foundation will allow us to purchase the first-grade Leap Track Learning System. The system will provide the first-grade students at Rees Elementary the opportunity to receive individual reading instruction through the use of interactive books. We feel extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to provide this level of instruction to our students." These grants are funded through the fund-raising efforts of the Nebo Education Foundation board. One fund-raising effort is the annual "Green Fever" golf tournament that helps fund these various grants throughout the year. The foundation also accepts donations from individuals and businesses to support projects. The Nebo Education Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) organization created to bring businesses and donors together for the benefit of Nebo District school children.. The foundation carefully manages and disperses tax deductible donations to local schools. Anyone interested in donating to Nebo District schools, classes or programs can do so through the Nebo Education Foundation. Your contribution is a tax deductible charitable gift as provided by law. Spanish Oaks teacher receives Crystal Apple Amberlie Fackrell, Speech-Language Pathology teacher at Spanish Oaks Elementary, was awarded the 2008-2009 Crystal Apple Award. The presentation was made by Craig Harvey of Horace Mann Insurance. Amberlie is a master teacher who works at Spanish Oaks and East Meadows Elementary Schools. She has a Masters Degree in Speech-Language Pathology from Utah State University. Amberlie works with students from preschool-6th grade. She works on articulation and all parts of language such as pragmatics, semantics, syntax, auditory processing, etc. She teaches and helps develop the curriculum for Nebo School District's speech preschools and is the district representative for Nebo's Autism Parent/Educator support group. Amberlie is always willing to go the extra mile to try new ideas and to make learning exciting for her students. Amberlie has been a member of the Spanish Oaks Faculty for six years. She enjoys working with the students, faculty, principal and staff at Spanish Oaks. When she isn't helping students at school she likes to read, follow her two boys and husband around to the rodeos, enjoy her three dogs and ride horses. ALA debates in Salt Lake The ALA Speech and Debate Team has been hard at work in the weeks leading up to their competition at Olympus High School in Salt Lake last Thursday. The team put together a concession stand the week before Christmas break in an effort to raise funds to purchase their red and black team sweatshirts. All members proudly wore their colors as they headed up to compete. The team was very successful in their competition. Competitors included Pam Gardner, Greg Mora, Tyler Zeeman, Stephanie Flores, Ben Scott, Sydney Bowen, Addison Blair and Jared Howe. Tyler Zeeman won third place in impromptu speaking, Addison Blair won fourth place in impromptu speaking, and Ben Scott won third place in storytelling. All ALA competitors represented their school extremely well, with eight team members successfully competing in two events each. Unlock the door to better community news X L W S- Spanish Fork Courtesy photo OPERA BY CHILDREN: Mrs. Allred's 5th grade class has been painting and preparing for their Opera by Children performance that will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009 at 2 p.m. The opera will be done entirely by the students. They create the lyrics, come up with the feeling and pace of the music, paint the set and choreograph the staging of the opera. Mrs. Allred said, "It's all a lot of fun and helps students build leadership and teamwork skills. It's a lot of work but it will all pay off in the e n d / ' |
