Salem Hills High Senior, Emily Fulton, has been interning at the Springville Art Museum all school year during one of her high school class periods. She has loved to draw and paint ever since she was a little girl, so doing this internship was a no brainer for her. She says she loves "expressing herself through the visual aspect of the art." Her responsibilities there are mostly curatorial work: working with the art, setting it up and packing and un-packing it. She says she loves working with the art and loves the entire experience. When Emily graduates she's not sure what she wants1 to do but she does know that she either wants to do something involving art or something related to law. Emily Fulton Park Elementary receives grant Paula Farrer and Susan Cloward, literacy specialists at Park Elementary, received a literacy grant from Nebo Education Foundation. This money will purchase non-fiction leveled reading books. Ms. Farrer said, "Park School students and faculty would like to thank the Nebo Education Foundation for helping to meet the needs and interests of students. The books that will be purchased with this grant will bring reading success and enjoyment to our students." Susan Cloward said, "Thank you for your generous donation to Park School. This money will purchase non-fiction books for our leveled library. We are fortunate to have a good selection of fiction titles in our library, but have very few nonfiction books. Because students spend the majority of their school years reading content area text, we feel it is important to teach them the skills they need to understand nonfiction books. We also find that young boys find nonfiction text more interesting than narrative so these books will be an important reading motivation for them. Thank you so much for all you do for the students and teachers in Nebo School District. The Nebo Foundation really does make a difference in the lives of students." The Nebo Education Foundation meets the first of every month to discuss educational grants for students in Nebo School Dis- trict. One of the goals of the foundation is to fund worthwhile projects in the district that provide resources to enrich student learning. The Nebo Education Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) organization created to bring businesses and donors together for the benefit of Nebo District school children. The foundation carefully manages and disperses tax deductible donations to local schools. Anyone interested, in donating to Nebo District schools, classes or programs can do so through the Nebo Education Foundation. Your contribution is a tax deductible charitable gift as provided by law. The top scoring 7th and 8th grade students participated in the school geography bee on Jan. 7. The winner of the geography bee was Logan Nelson, a seventh grader. He was awarded a certificate and medal from National Geographic. Logan will find out in the next few weeks if he qualifies to participate in the state geography bee in March at Thanksgiving Point. Ninth grade students are not eligible to participate in the geography bee but those students scoring highest on the test were awarded cash prizes. The winning ninth graders were 1st place, Chad Flake; 2nd place, James Biesinger; 3rd place (tie), Sarah Harris and Madison Hurst. We congratulate these geography "experts" and wish Logan good luck! As part of the internship, she is able to get hands on experience shadowing doctors and nurses in their element. Said Cook's advisor, "This is a great way for students to see what having a career in nursing would be like." Witnessing assessments, assisting in feeding the babies as well as changing and applying lotion are just a few of the many excit- ing opportunities opened up to Cook. "It is also a great way to learn how to interact with other doctors, as well as the patients." Cook is a great example of the pursuit of excellence that occurs everyday at Salem Hills, and she has really taken advantage of the opportunities that are around her.
