They earned this fun day by meeting their classroom reading goals. Each first-grade class had to fill their Polar Reading Express train car and in order to do this each student had to read at least six books. Since they all met their goal, students got to wear pajamas to school, make Polar Express trains out of chocolate HoHo's, starlight mints and chocolate bells and then they got to watch the movie, "Polar Express". It was a great way to celebrate all of their hard work! Pictured, left to right, in front of the Polar Reading Express are first-grade students, Garrett Dedrickson, Aleah Lanegan, Mya Reisewitz, Trey Page, Lexus Hazel, Hannah Prior, Wyatt Davis and Boston Wilson. The character trait for December was "Hard Work." When teachers saw their students exhibiting this particular trait or other positive traits, they gave them a citizenship card. At the end of the month, a student from each class was selected as a "Canyon Champ." The following students were selected as Canyon Champs, great citizens, for December. East Meadows CRYSTAL APPLE: Brockbank is proud to announce Janna Runolfson as the Horace Mann Crystal Apple Award recipient for this year. This is Janna's fifth year teaching first grade. She is very warm and kind to both students and staff members. She has a genuine love and interest for every student in her class; she can hardly make it down the hall without former students running up to her and greeting her. Janna is very patient and kind and truly looks for the good in others. Janna is always smiling and always has something positive to say to those she comes in contact with. Congratulations, Janna! During the workshop, various athletes and guests spoke to the students about goal setting and motivated them to do their best. There were lots of interactive activities, and all of the students left with a better understanding of what it takes to be successful. Pictured are, Madison Humphreys and Brandon Fullmer watching Spica Burr and Brigham Bailer try their hand at putting the golf ball. Mt. Loafer WARM THE SOLES: For the past two weeks, East Meadows Elementary students have been collecting change for the Warm the Soles program. This is a local program sponsored by Nebo Credit Union. The credit union collects names of students in our district who need new shoes for the cold weather season, and donations from members and the elementary coin drive fund the purchase of the shoes. East Meadows student council runs* a student store in the mornings before school begins, and they matched the funds collected from the students. The school contribution this year was $546.05. Many thanks to Nebo credit union and our supportive students and their families for "Warming the Soles" of children in need! Courtesy photo HOT AND COLD!: The sixth-grade students at Mt. Loafer Elementary School learned why it is hot in the summer and cold in the winter and just cool in the spring and fall! They learned that because the earth is tilted, the sun's rays hit the earth at different places which causes temperatures to rise and drop all over the earth. The students did experiments with lamps, globes, and solar panels that helped the students see why this is so. The students also made predictions and gave surveys to see what other students believed about the earth and seasons before the students performed the experiments. This helped students prepare -for the experiments and look for answers to questions that they had come up with! This was a great learning activity for the sixthgraders!
