Lewis had 16 points for the Spaniards. st LA Chad Vest STAFF WRITER The colors of red and green instantaneously put Christmas on the brain. However, when it comes to local sports, it's all about the good old rivalry between Spanish Fork and Payson. The Mighly Dons started the New Year off with a bang. The Lions struggled to hold onto the ball due to a ferocious defense by the red and gray which pressed from the start. As a team, SF penetrated the hoop early and often and made it to the charity stripe for nearly 40 tries on the night. "We didn't settle for the three," said Bailey. "We got a lot of baskets inside and it helped us get to the free throw line," where SF went 28/38 on the night. They also capitalized off of steals which were created from an amazing team effort with great hustle. Payson made it interesting in the second half with several lead chang- es which resulted from the trey ball and inside play but the home team hit crucial free throws in the final minute to tame the Lions by the score of 80-75. Spanish set the tone with their physical style of play and simply out hustled their opponent in every phase of the game. The Dons fullcourt press forced two steals which were converted into easy fast break See RIVALRY • 10 Skyhawk wrestlers continue winning ways Jeril Bills STAFF WRITER The Salem Hills High School wrestling team defeated Carbon Wednesday, 45-31, in a dual meet held at Salem Hills. Lightweight and forfeit victories secured the win for Salem, which won all but one of its first nine matches scoring three forfeits, four falls, and one 12-7 decision in which Skyhawk Freshman Craig Findlay battled back from a nosebleed injury and early three-point deficit to defeat Carbon's Cody Hunt in the 119 lb. division. Findlay held his opponent to just 2 total points in the final two periods. Three of Salem's four falls came in the first period of the match. Freshman Spencer Davis (103 lbs.) pinned his opponent in 1: 25, and his teammate Chase Wilson followed suit, scoring a first period fall in the 112 Ib. division., as did Sophomore Jake Frank in the 125. Salem's total dominance proved temporary, though, as Carbon won all of the remaining five matches, scoring three falls, one decision, and one major decision (a 13-3 Nico Velasquez victory over Salem's Alex Gibb). Fortunately for Salem, the meet was already theirs by the time the tide shifted: even with five falls in all five of the final matches, the most Carbon could have scored would have been 30 points, and they still would have lost by 9. They ended up losing by 14. Of the meet, Salem Hills coach T.J. Brindley said his team wrestled well, but "made a couple of youthful mistakes." He emphasized the youth of his team, and it's worth noting — nine of Salem Hills' 14 varsity vvres\ Namon Bills / Spanish Fork News CRUNCH TIME: Salem's Chase Wilson manhandles his opponent in an earlier meet against AF. tiers are either freshmen or sophomores. Still, Coach Brindley said it was a good win and a good overall meet. 'The whole team, they wrestled tough, and these guys do give a good effort every time they step out on the mat, which I appreciate," he said. With the win, Salem im- proves to 3-2 in dual meets. Upcoming are region meets against North Sanpete, Emery and Juan Diego. |
