At Carbon the Skyhawks didn't even drop a game. Everyone enjoyed 6-0, 6-0 victories. The Delta match was a little tougher, but Salem Hills still had an impressive win. "I like what I am seeing from our girls. They are playing smart and as a team. They stay and cheer on their teammates after their match is over. It seems that everyone is enjoying the competition," said Coach Karl Ward. Salem Hills is led by captains Danielle Jones at first singles and Elisa Lewis at second singles. Sophomore Kelsey Tolbert is a great, consistent player at third singles. The doubles teams look to be strong this year with Debryn Saunders, Morgan Miller, Linsey Johnson and Brenda Findlay. Even though a lot of the girls met each other for the first time this year, the team has been getting along great. "It's pretty much a party every practice," said Debryn Saunders. It may be the school's first year, but the girls still have their sites set high. "I really hope we can take second in region," said Saunders. Coach Karl Ward is a native of the Lakewood/ Long Beach, Calif, area, but moved to Elk Ridge eight years ago with his wife Karla to raise their seven children. He is an active member of the US Tennis Association. He helped his team take second in the Mountain West Sectional tournament. At the 4.0 level he is ranked fourth in men's singles and first in men's doubles. "My number one goal is for everyone to have fun. That goal is being met. I am having a blast, and I think the girls are too. My second goal is to have a winning season as a brand new school. Salem Hills Football ALA: From EAGLES • B l Namon Bills / Spanish Fork News ROAD WARRIORS: Salem Hills hit the road Friday, Sept. 5 to take on Uintah High School in Vernal. The Utes played a consistent game, scoring one touchdown each quarter, with two in the fourth, to beat the Skyhawks, 35-12. Highlights for Salem came with touchdowns in the second and fourth quarters. The first was on a two-yard run by Kolapa Wolsgramm and the second was on a 10-yard run by Jason Anderson, above. Salem Hills returns home Sept. 12, when they will take on Union in their firstever homecoming contest. The hybrid in the garage saves them money at the pump. J ALA made two interceptions before Cedar City broke into the end zone again, but the Eagles couldn't do much on offense, and Cedar led 35-0 at the half. ALA came out energized to begin the second half, as Bryson Telaroli returned the opening kickoff all the way to the Cedar City 22-yard line. Kyle Telaroli made a 20-yard run a few plays later, and after a little difficulty near the goal line, the Eagles scored. A successful two-point conversion made it a 35-8 ballgame. But the Redmen quickly answered, going 69 yards on a touchdown run by Treyson Fullmer, then making two interceptions that helped them score two more touchdowns and take a 56-8 lead. With no remaining chance of winning the game, ALA regardless continued to make an effort to push the ball downfield. On their last drive they barely missed the end zone, travelling to the one-yard line before the game ended and Cedar took home the win. ALA head coach Tom Fell expressed frustration with his team, saying he felt some of his players gave up before the game even began. Next week the Eagles face Emery on the road before beginning region play with their homecoming game the following week against Manti. Lady Dons spike Payson Bryan Redd STAFF WRITER The SF girls traveled to Payson on Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008 for a highly anticipated volleyball match. The Lady Dons look to be a talented team in 2008, and they defeated the Lions in 3 straight sets. The Dons came out fast with great team effort in the first set. Spanish Fork dominated at the net with 6 blocks and 8 kills. Kylie Schofield played intensely in the first set, leading the Dons to an 18-12 lead when the Lions called time out. The time out did not slow the SF team from putting the Lions away 25-21. The Dons jumped out to an early 7-2 lead in the second set, but the Lions clawed their way back to tie 10-10. SF called time out and made excellent adjustments, coming back with big spikes by 5 Dons to post a convincing 25-19 win, taking a commanding 2-0 lead. " The third set was great volleyball. Payson played aggressively, jumping out 12-8 and forcing SF to call time. SF stormed back tying the match 15-15 and the fans watched a great spike and volley performance from Spanish Fork and Payson. The Dons wrapped up the third set 26-24 after a nice middle block and service error from Payson. "The SF girls played with lots of confidence. Our pass-serve effort was great tonight. We had no let downs and no menta! errors. I am so proud of how these girls played," said Coach Diana Troyer. The Lady Dons visit Salem Hills on Sept.II, 2008. SAM'S PREP OF THE WEEK Breck Lewis • Senior • Football * Quarterback Senior Breck Lewis is in his second year at quarterback for the Dons. In the homecoming game against Payson, Lewis went 14-21 and had 225 yards passing. He also amassed 50 yards rushing and threw for four TDs in the 36-0 shutout of the Lions.
