There she sits at the Pangutich Hospital Thrift Store three days a week sorting what comes in. They tell me without her help the store just wouldn't make it. "Don't you know that a body needs something useful to do or it dies?" she told me. There is a popular book out making quite a stir in this old world—A PURPOSE DRIVEN LIFE. I have read it. It is good. Same stuff that gets brought out every few decades. Like the Covey books that emphasize having goals. Well, Blanche could probably write her own book. But her example speaks thousands of words. Here are some of her good hints that she has taken the trouble to pass on. Use honey over an injured place on the body. It will prevent infection and will cause the wound to heal nicely. Skunks under the porch? Throw out a handful of moth balls and leave for awhile. Skunks will leave and not return. (Town folks won't have much need for this hint, but us cabin folks will likely appreciate it.) Outside eating: you will not have flies if you put some mint leaves or mint gum at the side of each person's plate. (I think she means chewing gum. That is a nice thing to give guests to help them feel their teeth are clean when they can't go brush them after eating.) Old houses sometimes have old wallpaper that needs removing. Fill a spray bottle with hot water and a half cup of fabric softener. Spray, wait 20 minutes and peel away. Painting: To keep leftover paint from hardening, pour some melted paraffin over the top.. Picnics or other crowded places: To keep a small child from getting lost in a crowded setting, pin a whistle to his orjier shirt. Then you are just a whistle away. Baths: Powdered milk "softens" bathwater and is cheaper than bubble bath. A partially inflated beach ball over the tub rim can keep your neck comfortable when reclining. To remove sand from vegetables, place some salt in the soaking water, then rinse. Umbrella trouble? Put an electrical-wire cap over the end of an umbrella spoke, if you lose the original plastic tip. Fresher Vegetables: Put foods such as asparagus and parsley standing up in a jar with some water. Put a plastic bag over the top and refrigerate. Use car wax to clean plastic counters and tabletops.
