Show ANTIMONY NEWS OBITUARIES NINA JOUNE MITCHELL Nina Joune Mitchell (formerly of Panguitch, Utah), passed away on August 16, 2006, at the age of eighty (79), while a resident of Hurricane Rehabilitation Center. Joune, as she liked to be called, was born October 26, 1926 in Rochester, Minnesota, to the proud parents. Nina Ruth and John William Stridden The second of four children, Joune spent her childhood years with her siblings, John, Doris and Eddy, in and around Rochester where she completed high school and met her future husband, Vernon Raymond Mitchell. Introduced through Vern's brother Carl and a group of mutual friends, they were eventually married on November 6, 1942, in Rochester, Minnesota. They moved to St. Louis, Missouri where Joune stayed and worked during Vern's deployment to Europe during World War II through 1944. As with many in those years, they heard the call of California and relocated in 1944 to Linwood, California where they started their family, Joune giving birth to Nancy Lee in 1944 and to Thomas Raymond in 1948. Relocating to Compton, California in 1950, a second son, Mark Allan was borne. During these years, Joune was a stay at home mom, while Vem worked as a reinforcing iron worker. The family relocated again in 1953, moving to Lancaster in the high desert region of Antelope Valley, California where Joune was the sole proprietor of a commercial chicken farm and raised her three children, while Vem did steel work at various locations throughout California. A fourth child, Pamela Dawn, was born in 1956. Throughout her children's school years and beyond, Joune was a very involved, supportive and loving mother. She served as Room-Mother for all her children's classes during all their elementary years providing special treats and parties, renowned by all their classmates. Joune was a leader and supporter for a myriad of children's activities including Parent Teachers Association, Little League Baseball, Brownies, Girl Scouts, 4-H, FFA and various beauty pageants. Joune always supported and encouraged the children's efforts at school and never hesitated to aid principals and teachers alike in defining and enforcing the Golden Rules. She was always ready to share how very proud she was of all her children. AUGUST 31,2006 T H E GARFIELD COUNTY INSIDER Page 3 • . •. • " • On the home front, Joune loved to cook, can, bake, sew and crochet providing a wealth of memories and family heirlooms. From sewing school clothes, cross-country ski bibs and pageant dresses, to canning preserves, pickles and trout, to baking ginger-bread cookies, home-made brownies and cinnamon roles, to making fabulous enchiladas and special birthday cakes, Joune plied her skills, knowledge and love unconditionally on all her children as testament to the importance of family. Leaving California in 1972, Joune and Vem moved to Panguitch, Utah after a short stopover in Glendale, Arizona. From 1973 till 1984,Joune worked a variety of retail jobs at resorts around Bryce Canyon area. Following the death of her husband in 1980, Joune began planning to open the business she had always dreamed of, a bakery, and in 1984, she opened up the Cinnamon House Bakery in Panguitch, famous for it's cinnamon rolls, specialty breads, pastries and home-canned jellies. Serving tourist, towns people and surrounding resorts, numerous letters from patrons far and near praised her product, professionalism and friendliness during her years in business. An avid dancer, Joune loved to jitter-bug to the songs from the 40's and 50's with her closest of friends and neighbor, Buck Buckles. Joune continued to live at the junction of Hwy 89 and 12 till her stroke in 2000. In her last six years Joune lived her life with the same vigor, perseverance, dedication and love for family and friends that exemplified ail her prior years of service. Mom, you carried on after Dad's parsing and set an example, for your children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends of how love, perseverance, creativity and plain old stubbornness can leave a legacy which will never be forgotten. Joune is survived by her children, Nancy Derrick, Tom (Gail) Mitchell, Mark Mitchel.l and Pamela Jarman; her grandchildren, Amy Mitchell, Brian Derrick, Chris-Ann Young, Daniel Mitchell, Louis Capasso, Jennifer Jarman and Rhonda Fayhee; her great- grandchildren, Ricky Mitchell, Christopher Capasso, Corbin Capasso, Ryan Young, Gavin Wardle and Aspen Jarman; and by her dearest of friends and companion, Mr. Buck Buckles A viewing will be on Friday, August 25,2006, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Hurricane Valley Mortuary, 140 N. Main St., Hurricane, UT, and again on Saturday, August 26,2006 at the Panguitch 1st Ward LDS Chapel, 550 S. 100W., Panguitch, Utah, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Graveside services will take place Saturday, at 1:00 p.m. at the Panguitch City Cemetery, Arrangements are made under the direction of Spilsbury Mortuary, St. George, Utah, (435) 635-2454.
