Ben Paz/UVSC Athletics UVSC road roundup Womens soccer struggles on the road Dave Gillespie Sports Writer For the past week, the UVSC Women's Soccer team took a couple of road trips competing in a tournament in Wyoming and facing off against Midwest teams in Indiana. The girl's battled hard and finished the trip 23, losing their first and their last two. In the Cowgirl Shootout the Wolverines battled Montana, droping the match 3-0. The girl's gave up two goals in the first five minutes but competed the rest of. the game refusing to let the game turn to a true blow out. "You take away the first five minutes and we had a game on our hands," Utah Valley State coach Brent Anderson said. "Once we decided to play we gave them a game." UVSC then took on Tulsa and faired much better beating the Golden Hurricanes 2-1. Utah Valley out shot Tulsa 168, with Chelsea Stone and Jenni Wright providing the two goals, respectively. "We had a game plan and we stuck to it," Anderson said. 'The girls were consistent in their play all day. It was an incredible team effort. Every single person did their part and did it perfectly." That team effort helped the girl's smash New Jersey Tech 6-0 out shooting the never-heard-of team 29-2. "Overall I was pleased with the speed of our play from all of our players," Anderson said. "We moved the ball around very nicely." Rebbeca Peterson was named the United Soccer Conference offensive player of the week for her performance in the match. She notched two goals and an assist in the blowout. A rematch ensued in the fourth game as the Wolverines played Indiana-Purdue of Fort Wayne (1PFW). Last year, the two teams competed in the United Soccer Conference Championship, which IPFW earned a difficult 2-1 victory. This year's match up was no different as the first half ended in a 0-0 tie. Unfortunately, IPFW put two goals in, in the 63rd and 67th minute to put the UVSC away. The team wrapped up the week on the road when they traveled to Boise State. UVSC runners getting it done James Warnick Sports Writer The Utah Valley State Cross Country team pretty much ran the table on Sept.2 at the Idaho State Invitational in Pocatello. The men's team finished second overall, while the women reigned supreme, finishing in first place. "It was a great performance from everyone, and the new additions to the team looked very good," Houle said. This impressive showing was an important step to UVSC's goal of winning the Independent Championship this season. The men's team was lead by their anchor senior Joe Bendoski with a first place finish of 18:56 in the 6k. Fellow UVSC runner Chase Englestead took fifth at 19:48, with Jake Buhler crossing just three seconds later for sixth place. Karinne Bentley took fifth at 11:02, Bekah Poppinga came in at 11:09 earning sixth place, while Kirsten Barney, Trisha Wright, and Kim Rowberry finished eighth, ninth, and tenth respectively. Coach Houle was very pleased with the team's effort and fortitude to finish strong in this early season classic meet. "This meet was a great confidence builder for us, and showed that our team runs well together," coach Houle said. "It was also a good stepping stone for us to build on each week, and excited us that we will continue to get better and better. The best thing about running, is that you can compare yourself to time. You can tell as a team if you are getting better and better, and sometimes that is the most important thing." FOOD & DRUG STORES The card is absolutely FREE! Sign-up takes about ONE MINUTE!
