Show life Mark Wahlberg: rock UV Student Government MONDAY -SEPTEMBER 11 •2006 B4 star now jock star Jason Pyles Life Writer Call me un-American, but I'm just not a football fan. This confession adds emphasis to my next shocking statement: Mark Wahlbeni's football-drama Invincible is excellent. It reminds me of another, lesser, Marky Mark movie called Rock Star (2001) where Wahlberg plays an aspiring musician who becomes the new lead singer for his favorite rock band. Invincible also has that dream-come-true element which is one reason why this movie is such a crowd pleaser. Based on true events and a real person. Invincible casts Wahlberg in that same underdog story: number-one fan gets to join the ranks of those he idolizes. The plot: It's the mid1970s and the Philadelphia Eagles are a losing team. In Courtesy Photo/Buena Vista an attempt to rectify that, the legendary Dick Vermeil (Greg Kinnear) is hired as the Eagles' new coach. As a publicity stunt, and perhaps in secret hopes of a miracle, Vermeil hlds open tryouts for the team. Vince Papale (Wahlberg), a 30-year-old, die-hard Eagles fan, tries out and makes the cut. Invincible conjures up the 1970s quite well. The sets, soundtrack, hairstyles and clothing reflect that decade. Moreover, you'll notice that the film itself has a yellowish tint, giving the impression that you're watching actual archival footage. In Cinderella Man, another sporty heartwanner, Russell Crowe's biographical performance as boxer Jim Braddock portrays his fight to feed his family. When I saw that movie, I was inspired to be better - not a better boxer - just a better man. Invincible portrays a man's fight to prove to himself, among others, that he is not a failure. This movie has also inspired me. Not to be a football player or even a better man; instead, it inspired me to pump some iron so my pectoral muscles will jiggle when I run,'just as Mark Wahlberg's do. man's fight to prove to himself, among others, that he is not a failure. This is the place to hear our representatives discuss upcoming events and matters directly pertaining to students. These meetings are open to all students, and those involved in the specialized branches and committees within ASUVSC may contribute first-hand to planning events and contributing to studentfaculty concerns. To join in, visit the ASUVSC offices and sign up with the committee you are most interested in becoming involved with. As well established as ASUVSC is, there are challenges facing the organization. Although student government's "Week of Welcome" had an impressive turn-out, few students in attendance were aware of ASUVSC's involvement in the event, or their role in campus life. After opening for Eric Clapton and the Stones for several shows, the trio headlined a few of their own shows, one of which was released as a live album entitled Try! Since having made public his blues skills, Mayer has played with many music legends from B.B. King and Buddy Guy to Herbie Hancock and Eric Clapton. After accomplishing so much, Mayer will be releasing a self-written, self-produced third studio album Continuum (in stores Tuesday, Sept. 12). He described his new album by saying, "With any trilogy, the third in the series blows it open." Continuum is his most mature album. The easy-going tones set in his earlier work are tossed out. Mayer said, "A lot of these songs are about coming to terms with getting older," and it this shows in songs like "Stop This Train" and "In Repair." Songs like "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room" and '"Dreaming with a Broken Heart"' describe the deepest heartbreak in a beautiful and comprehensive way. To counteract the heavy themes of are the light and fun son«s like the album's first single "Waiting on the World to Change" and a covej of Jimi Hendrix's "Bold As Love." If you're dying for something new to listen to, don't miss out on Mayer's latest. Toss out any preconceived notions of John Mayer being a pop star and experience him at his most mature. You'll be quite surprised at how different Continuum is. This album is a wonderful blend of all the best parts of his music thus far.
