Show life B2 MONDAY • SEPTEMBER 11 -2006 Chocolate lovers' Latin dance club Jason Pyles Life Writer Imagine flowing fountains of cascading chocolate and sexy salsa dancing and you'll have a mental picture of Provo's new Latin dance club, Salsa Chocolate (choh-coh-lah-tay). Every Thursday from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. and Friday from 9 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., Salsa Chocolate becomes part of Provo's nightlife. When the doors first open, those who seek salsa instruction can pay a $4 cover charge and receive a 60-minute dance lesson. After 10 p.m., latecomers can enter the dance floor for $5. Salsa Chocolate's dance instructors are Gwen Louw, a 2005 UVSC alumna, and charismatic Victor "Captain Style" Mosquera from Cuenca, Ecuador. Doug Kleven the club's co-owner said, "Our dance instructors are the best there are." Brian Nelson, the other co-owner and executive of Salsa Chocolate agreed, "Victor and Gwen are amazing." • Mosquera is one of Salsa Chocolate's most popular attractions with his outlandish outfits, aromatic aftershave and advice about wooing women with dance. "The thing is, everybody can dance," Mosquera informed the Times, "that's my philosophy: if you can walk, you can dance." Mosquera admitted that he has only been salsa dancing since November and has never taken professional classes. "All I learned is from the street," Mosquera said. Platters of strawberries, marshmaliows, cookies and pretzels are available for dipping into three triple- tiered chocolate fountains. DJ GDL, the disc jockey that has been playing B YU's salsa club dances for seven years, supplies Salsa Chocolate's Latin beats and its atmospheric lighting. Hardwood floors, brick walls and pillars, and multiple floor fans that assist the air conditioning contribute to the comfort and ambience of the club. Kleven said, 'it's growing. We had 260 people last Thursday, and Fridays are a little slower - we've gotten about 160 to 180." By the end of September, Kleven expects that Salsa Chocolate will draw 300 people per night. One of the regular attendees UVSC student Leah Baker said, "It's just a good way to have fun and meet new people." Salsa Chocolate is located at 116 W. Center St. in Provo.
