News Writer UVSC has removed its monolith from the student commons area. All that remains is a boarded up hole covered by a rug. It was taken down the Thursday before school started. Tom Hover, former associate vice president for Student Services at UVSC, proposed its erection to the student council around the 2001-2002 school year. The student council approved. Aflyermade around the time of the monolith's construction gave insight into its creation, it explained the idea came from 2001: A Space Odyssey. It was built in memory of Verl Fawn Morgan, who died of cancer in 2000 and had taught in the UVSC Art Department. "The Monolith is a gift of inspiration for future generations of students seeking their creative power within," Hover said. Seventy-five thousand dollars were spent to build the monolith. It cost the school $2 thousand a year to maintain it. Bob Rasmussen the Assistant Vice President of Student Life and Dean Rasmussen says that if money hadn't been spent on the monolith it probably would have gone toward some other art or decor. Rasmussen wants the commons to be a place dedicated to the students. When the monolith was first built he felt it made the commons more exciting and inspirational. He wants the commons to be functional and attractive again.
