Show lite AUGUST 29-2005 Putting the pieces together John Ditzler Executive Editor "/ still have hope in music being able to bridge the gap of alienation. I still believe that music can be a medium for a message of sincere change. I still think that we can construct real change rather than just criticize what we see is wrong in the world." - Blake Donner, 1980 - 2005, singer of Parallax. "We'd like to take some time to decide that," said Elliot Secrist one of the band's guitarists. Parallax has been together since 2000. The band's upcoming album Mediums and Messages produced by CounteriVitelligence Recordings is set to be released October 8, 2005. Surviving band members Michael Collins, guitar; Elliot Secrist, guitar; Charles Bogus, drums; and Travis Low, bass; as well countless fans and individuals contributing to the albums production are all committed to pushing forwad with the albums release. Friends say Donner was extremely excited about the upcoming release of this album during his last days here, and according to Kevin Michael Spring, co-owner of Counterintelligence Recordings, Donner was planning on finally getting to sample the albums reference master on August 18th, the day Donner passed away. Donner wrote the lyrics for all nine of the albums songs but the tunes were created collaboratively. Secrist described the process of creating the music to accompany Dormer's lyrics, "Different members of the band might come up with little pieces of melody at home and then we'll bring those to practice. Then when we're all in the room together a ton of other ideas will pop up collectively as we build on what we separately composed and brought to practice." A inexpensive ticket Cheaper concessions make the University Mall Cinemas one of the best bargains in town Michelle Walker Life Editor It hosted your eight year old birthday party, was your favorite weekend hangout in junior high, and admit it...you "cruised" it in high school. But what has the dollar movie theater done for you lately? Sure it's a cheap date, but sometimes sitting (if you're lucky enough to find a seat) in a stuffy theater packed with driver license-less teens just makes you feel, well...cheap. First of all, let's use the college word "inexpensive" if it makes you feel better, and face the facts. We're all college students and we're all pretty poor. We need inexpensive entertainment, but if you're like me and sick of dealing with the long lines, sticky floors, sold-out shows and public displays-of affection at Movies 8, there is an alternative, mysteriously obscure, dollar theater just down the road. Although University Mall Cinemas re-opened in April 2003, it remains relatively unknown to most college students, and I really don't know why. From potter)' to painting, our very own art gallery has explored art's concepts in a variety of ways. "Regions of the Mind," Woodbury \s latest exhibit, explores the regions of the human mind and individual perspective through contemporary art. The concept behind the exhibition is that no two minds are alike-that one brain envisions things in one way and another in quite another gives birth to an arrangement of thoughts and ideas that are so unique and different. This exhibit is a presentation of the cerebral differences that separate and unite humanity. Each expression of thought is so individualized to the artist that the patrons experiencing the exhibition can move from his/her predisposed thought into another realm of possibilities according to the artist. While some sculpture is strictly formal in its intention, others are more abstract in concept, and serve as catalysts to the ideas of the various artists. The exhibition includes both objects and installations to present a sense of movement from one thought to another. The idea is to be able to move through the minds of the artists-through darkness and into illumination. Death, transcendence, stability, religion, passage, light and thought are all themes pored over in "Regions of the Mind." 60 Minutes • A Particle w/Gabby Lala, 8/31 " @ @The TheVelvet Velvet Room Room •w C Mushroomhead, Dope, Nac• turne, 9/3 @ Lo Fi Cafe A * Flogging Molly, 9/1 @ In The Venue A Alpha Blondy, 9/4 @ Suede 0 Live & Direct 05 Tour w/Souls J "The Lord of the Rings I," 9/1 of Mischief, 9/1 @ Suede 'JQ£fc, @ Scera Shell ^ iMiT4T*T*l I M The Black Eyed Peas- I Monkey Business I 5 NCIS Visit us online at www.netxnews.net Regions of the Mind Opening Exhibit, 9/2 @ Woodbury Art Musoum £ £ NFL Game Night, 9/2 @ I Sorensen Student Center 1 "The Lord of the Rings 11/' 9/2 @ Scera Shell "The Lord of the Rings IN/' 9/3 @ Scera Shell .tell06@aol.com |
