There will be a total Funds allocated for forensics/debate The I'VSC Communication Department announced that its funding request to The School o( Humanities. Aris and Sciences was successful. As a result of the regular school PBA process. the Communication Department will receive a S 10,000 one-time grant for the 20052006 school year to fund a Torensics/Debate team. "Prior to the new funding, UVSC's Forensics program operated on the thinnest of shoestring budgets." said I'VSC Assistant Forensics Director. James Hunter. Last year, according to Hunter, the Forensics program operated on a total allotment of $500, with students and coaches paying additional costs outol-poekel. Jason Nichols, UVSC's new Forensics Director, stated that he was "excited by the opportunities that this (the $10,000] presents to UVSC's Forensics Program and the Communication Department as a whole." He* went on to say that "I know that with the right students we can use this money as the springboard to bring forensics and debate back to UVSC as fully funded programs." In order to make the most out of the new grant, the Communication Department is looking for students who are interested in competing in approximately 10 tournaments during the 2005-2006 school year. Nichols said, "While we would like students with previous debate or forensics experience to join the team, we are excited to bring anyone on board who has the commitment and drive to make UVSC's program truly competitive. The success or failure of this program rests squarely on the students." There are two ways for interested students to be a part of the team. Students can either receive academic credit for participating in the program when they register for COMM 128R, or join the Forensics Club. Any students who are interested should contact either Jason Nichols or James Hunter through the Communication Department Office at 863-8452 or via email at nicholja@uvsc.edu.
