The ASA was searching tor students to spend their summer in an internship focused on biomedical research. Cardiovascular and Diabetes were the focus topics of the research. On a tip from Professor Olga Kopp, an assistant professor in UVSC's biology department, Jake Adams and Brandon Snedeger applied for the internship among stiff competition. Amidst students ranging from schools like Berkley. UCLA and Yale, to name a few. the two UVSC students were awarded intern spots and the opportunity to help in conducting research for the American Heart Association. The internship lasted 10 weeks and ran from June 6 until August 17. Both students spent their intern at the University of Utah, helping to research medical advancements in the bio-medical field, both students' contributions went to furthering the research conducted on both Diabetes and a cardiovascular study focused on being able to monitor the human heart more accurately. "The experience I left with has furthered my determination, and directed my field of study into becoming a cardiovascular surgeon or a cardiovascular pediatrician," said student Jake Adams, "but this opportunity would not have been possible without the help of my professors, especially professor Kopp." Professor Kopp was quite excited for the students and said, "At least one of the students is going to get a publication in a scientific journal because of the results obtained. It's quite an accomplishment that out of hundreds of students from all over the nation that applied, among the few that were accepted two were from right here at UVSC." She also encourages the message of "the wonderful things students are doing here" and hopes more students will look into applying for the great variety of internships that are out there and available.
