Show DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE 10 CONSTRUCTION continued from Page 1 University Guest House The University Guest House—located just west of Chapel Glen in Residence Halls—is undergoing a major expansion. The expansion will include a larger parking lot, as well as 51 new visitor rooms, a conference center and a new meeting space. The expansion won't affect the commute for students living in the Residence Halls, as it only covers areas south of the guest house. HPER Tunnel Project The HPER Tunnel Project will replace pipes that are more than 3o years old. The project is designed to replace the existing pipeline, which supplies heating and hot water for buildings across campus. It is a major hindrance to students on campus. "It's been bad enough the last few years having to navigate campus without the HPER highway," said Chase Hite, a senior in mass communication. "Now, the sidewalk just above the LNCO building is closed as well. It just makes getting to class that much harder." Construction under the HPER Mall has also taken away from students' ability to bike, longboard and skateboard down the long, downhill stretch of pavement—something common before the construction. It has also become a hindrance to those commuting from the Residence Halls, as that was the route of choice for Tuesday, January 18, 2011 those who chose not to take the shuttle. Track and Field The new track and synthetic field has been completed, but because of harsh weather constraints, is unlikely to feature any intramural sports. Sports clubs including men's rugby, men's and women's lacrosse, men's soccer and possibly ultimate Frisbee will use the new track and field, said Susan Miller, Campus Recreation's program manager. b.hill@chronicle.utah.edu BUDGET continued from Page 1 private funding the school has received and other opportunities the school offers students. Bills this year that will affect the U include the Nonresident Tuition Waiver Amendments, which will classify undocumented students as non-residents, which means they must pay outof-state tuition rates. Dunn said ASUU will be following this bill and lobbying against the provision that makes the change. "It forces students to drop out of school because they can't afford it," she said. Another topic that ASUU will be keeping an eye on is gun control at the U. The controversy over the U's leaked gun protocols involving open carrying will most likely bring about debate on how to interpret state gun laws on a college campus, she said. ASUU will be pushing for a change that will ban open carrying on campus. "The U is a different environment, and we want students to feel unthreatened," Dunn said. Students have the right to voice their opinion, she said. Dunn said ASUU will lobby against any legislative action that will negatively affect students.
