Show DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE Tuesday, January 18, 2011 7 #011,feeffrigeP1/64776WS RUGBY Utes 'learn tough lessons' at tourney NIGHTiNGALE COLLEGE SCHOOL OF NURSING Kelsey Price STAFF WRITER Utah rugby faced both the highs and lows of tournament play this weekend at the 2011 Dennis Storer Classic. Two early wins Saturday—over Washington State and USC—were eclipsed by the last match of the day, when Utah lost to defending national champion University of California, 35-o. However, the Utes redeemed themselves Sunday afternoon, crushing an overwhelmed Oregon 6o-o. Such a win, the Utes hope, will help ease the sting of the Cal loss. "Coming in as a new team in the Pac-io, it was good to see the level of competition we'll be seeing," said sophomore center Thretton Palamo. "Good to see us come from behind and capture a win against USC, showed a lot of heart. And Cal put us in a reality check." The Utes kicked off their run in the tournament against Washington State, ranked No. 21 in Division I—one division below Utah, which plays in the College Premier League. Utah forwards led the charge early in the half, holding off any advancement from the Cougars and making key plays for Utah's offense. Sophomore Ryan Snyder kicked the ball in the WSU side, which was recovered by sophomore flanker Chip Kiser for a try. Wing Kaye Lauti kicked the conversion to give Utah an early 7-0 lead in the fourth minute. The Utes closed out the half, 12-0. The second half was all Utah, with back-to-back tries from center Mote Houma and another conversion from Lauti to put the Utes up 24-0 five minutes into the half. Utah's backs used their speed to capitalize on gaps in WSU's defense, running away with a 43-o victory. Later Saturday, the Utes returned to the field to face USC. Utah drew first blood as Nick Mostyn forced the ball down the field for a try and a 5-o Utah lead. Although the Utes slipped behind USC 17-5 at the beginning of the second half, the team quickly recovered after a try from Lauti put the team back in contention as it trailed 10-17. Two more tries gave the Utes a final 24-17 edge. Saturday's final match of the day was the highly • • • • • • No 'Waiting List. Enroll Now!
