Show DAILY 8 UTAH CHRONICLE Tuesday, January 18, 2011 COWGIRLS RED ROCKS continued from Page 6 continued from Page 6 Wyoming (12-4, 3-1 MWC) followed that by hitting back-to-back 3s of its own and eventually pushed the lead to 21-5 halfway through the first. Badon said the Cowgirls' hard-nosed play was a big factor in the Utes falling behind so quickly. "They were physical with everybody," Badon said. "The first play, (Iwalani Rodrigues) couldn't even get to the basket. I think that set the tone of the game." Utah's offense finally started making headway when Rodrigues, Brittany Knighton and Badon hit consecutive 3s to pull the Utes back within 10 points. Rodrigues used that momentum to nail a 3 and a jumper on consecutive possessions to get within two points at 26-24, but Wyoming pulled back at the end of the half to take a 33 26 lead into the break. The Utes were able to cut the deficit to just one in the second half, but they could never get over the hump. Every time they went on a run to close the gap, the Cowgirls countered with a run of their own. Inhibiting Utah's ability to finally take the lead was its losing battle on the boards. The Utes were outrebounded 42-34 and gave up 15 offensive rebounds. "We can't win if we don't rebound on the defensive end," said head coach Anthony Levrets. "You just play 26, 27 seconds to get a stop, get them to miss, then they get it back. Now you've got to play 25, 26 seconds again and you're playing too long of possessions. It really hurt us tonight." After Utah crept to within one point at 35 34, Wyoming went on another run to push the lead to nine. Utah narrowed the gap to four twice more in the game but never came any closer. After Wyoming's initial scoring spurt to open the game, Utah settled in and played exceptional defense and held the Cowgirls to just 38.5 percent shooting for the game, which highlighted Levret's frustration after the game. "I told my team afterwards, we held them to 38 percent for the game," Levrets said. "When you hold somebody to 38 percent for the game in your building, you should win." Forward Michelle Plouffe, who leads the Utes in rebounding, got in foul trouble early on and played just 22 minutes. Her absence hurt the Utes on both ends of the floor. She made a small error, her 9.775 was crucial in boosting Utah's score to earn the win. "I could feel a little crooked in the air (on the first flight series), so I anticipated how to land on the beam and adjusted," Robarts said. "I know how to stay on." McAllister, who won the all-around against UCLA, narrowly missed her second-straight title, scoring a 39.175 for second place behind Georgia's Cassidy McComb, who scored a 39.350 . "She was sitting next to me for too long is where she was," said Levrets of Plouffe's performance. "It had not happened for a while. She had not gotten those early fouls, but (Aubrey) Van- tie diver's a hard matchup for her...That happens sometimes with young kids." Utah outrebounded Wyoming 2816 in the half, and earned io secondchance points off its eight offensive boards. The Cowboys showed some life early in the second half, as Desmar Jackson orchestrated an 11-2 run that brought Wyoming within nine with 13 minutes 23 seconds remaining in the half. Situations like this have plagued the Utes all season, but Utah responded with a pair of 3s from Chris Kupets and Josh Watkins that quieted the Arena-Auditorium and sealed the victory. "That was the first time this year that (an opponent) barraged us and we kept sharing it," Boylen said. "That's what we've got to continue to do." The victory allowed a Ute celebration that has become all too rare.
