L fishburn Fish bura was by a splendid address on salesmanship by john D spencer of salt lake the dean of salesmen in in the western states mr air y spencer gaye gave a forceful definition of 0 the term as it has come to apply in modern activities which is in short the transferring of any commodity so that both parties to the transaction reap a profit this Is somewhat higher ground than that commonly occupied by salesmanship of the old school tor for the profession under the old rules meant simply cimpl the selling 0 of goods no matter at what what profit to the purchaser so long as the seller reaped a goodly 4 1 margin margia salesmanship has now been diani fied by the title profession and is reckoned ona as fourth on the list of profession siby which man serves man and ble blesses ases him li im AndT an this i profession 0 ot modern day dav p enters into F ac every avenue of activity tor for ev eryin v divid wil has something bosell to sell k ite he may be a doctor a lawyer a banker a clerk a farmer a clergyman a lantor tor and in each case the individual has something to dispose of to his fellow bellow man for money and the ethics of cf the profession today require that the salesman must give at least per cent efficiency for evera every dollar and in selling goods he must give as much as ber per cent service tor for the modern man and woman is coming to recognize the service as equal to ta it if not just a little greater than the goods the salesman in any line who is unwilling to conduct his business along the standards demanded and recognized will mighty soon find himself distanced and supplemented by a salesman who can and will give the service required sir mr spencer stated that it is possible today to train men to become salesmen just as men become trained to do engineering bu building 1 tiling of all kinds and any of the fine arts it Is possible for the sales salesman man of 0 the old school to remodel his standard and become up to date it if he is willing to apply himself to the principles by which the modern standards are maintained it is possible for any individual to make himself absolutely ar thru 11 tile the applications of the principles of oe honesty courtesy thorough thor cruea under standing of the job in hand and a willingness lin gness to work Y p mr spencer exhibited some charts barts which gave in detail tile the steps alec hecea e s sary to take in order to make th the e sai sale s the first and perhaps the most important in that it furnishes opportunity for or the first impression is personae per personal sonai appearance and to emphasize the point the speaker gave illustrations 0 of the salesman who wears soiled ila eu shoes hair unkempt face covered by several days growth of beard and general slovenly appearance the personal appearance of the salesman will either hasten or retard his ability to attract favorable attention the first of the three final steps that make a sate sale and so going on down the line the chart illustrated continued on pan six bob organization COMPLETED continued from page one approach arrangement of selling talk knowledge ot of article loyalty to house treatment of competitor enthusiasm tactfulness persistency and the get away these steps have been enumerated in the order ot of their importance and the successful taking ot of them will almost invariably result in the three final steps ot or attracting attention inspiring confidence and creating cretin a tin g a desire after which comes naturally the sale mr air spencer declared that every person is blessed with over one hundred positive traits and at the same time lie he is burdened with the same number of negatives the success attained 1 in I life by the individual depends upon the extent to which lie develops the positive and diminishes the negative within him mr spencer was forced to cut short his In teresing remarks to catch the train tor for home after lie he had concluded
