Why do reporters do a story and then do it again and again and again? How come reporters repeat themselves? Why do they say things more than once making the same point repeatedly? Why do they repeat themselves? And then repeat themselves again? Why is it that journalists having told you something once turn right around and tell you the same thing again 19 times an hour? Did you ever notice that people in the news business repeat themselves? It seems odd but if a big story comes along in America today the newspapers and television stations do it over and over again repeating themselves and each other morning noon and night Are they trying to outdo each other or something? It sometimes seems that journalists cant just report a story a few dozen times over a few days until they can be certain that everyone in America who is interested has heard the story at least three times They have to do the same story until they are pretty sure everyone in American has heard it at least 10000 times Journal ts are like children the same Disney who movie six times a day for days on end The Disney movie of Washington press corps right now is presidential scandal They are kindly sharing it with you the way a kindly plays and replays that same Disney movie for himself and for his parents like it or not We in the press are like that We repeat things Consider congressional campaign-financing scandals for in- - wn BILL HALL stance Have you ever noticed that the press does dozens of stories on that topic even when the polls and common sense tell you that most people axe sick of it? What is it about journalists that they cant just tell you something once or twice about congressional campaign financing but have to keep telling you about it until most people are sick of it? Most people are sick of congressional-campaign financing stories but the press keeps telling them about it anyway over and over Campaign financing Over and over More than once A lot of times ? Are they gossips or some-tllLlg- You might even say the same thing is true of the presidents sex life Yes the presidents sex life is a lot like the story on congressional campaign financing which the press keeps repeating telling you about it again and again after having told you about it before Theyre repeating themselves is what they are doing The press does something like 19000 separate stories every day on the White House sex scandal telling you tacky details no sane person wants to know Repeatedly Every day Do we want to know that much detail about anybodys sex life even if its A1 Gores? Why do we journalists insist on telling you all of that stuff? (Did I mention we sometimes tend to repeat ourselves?) This is due to the tendency in the press to repeat stories over and over again including the reports of Monica Lewinsky Shes the one who was allegedly sexually involved with the president in that scandal that the press keeps telling you about more than you want to hear because there is something about people in my business that makes us incapable of telling one story and moving on to the next one We tend to repeat everything we say Everything we say we tend to repeat Repeatedly Especially about the president and Monica Lewinsky the woman who was allegedly involved in the sex scandal that we keep telling you about not because you havent already heard it but because it is our unfortunate tendency to repeat stories more times than you want to hear them Scandal scandal scandal Monica Monica Monica Monica Monica Sex sex sex sex sex sex sex sex sex sex sex sex (Help! Help! Does anybody know where the off switch is on me and my colleagues?) Shocking shocking shocking Hyping hyping yping (Are you as sick of us as we are?) JHE Hutchins was in Dear deed brilliant but TV has improved enormously since he made that statement He would be astonished if he could see what splendid fare TV offers today especially on public broadcasting Ann Landers co Chicago Tribune 435 N Michigan Ave Chicago IL 60611 Write to NFL should be sacked for beer ads For the month of January I traded Salt Lake City for the San Diego area and The Salt Lake Tribune for The San Diego Union Tribune The headline above appeared over Logan Jenkins Jan 21 column and it caught my attention For those of you who were in Katmandu or ICU Super Bowl XXXII was played in San Diego Jan 25 It was dubbed The Bud Bowl by some And rightly so It seemed wherever you went the Budweiser blimp hovered overhead Billboards spelled out XXXII with Budweiser bottles It goes without saying that Budweiser was the official beer of the Super Bowl Mr Jenkins reported a TV journalist was doing a spot on little kids visiting the Budweiser blimp In a classic slip the reporter described the children as future beer drinkers In teaming up with booze companies the NFL raised its mug to the drafting of another generation of underage drinkers He went on The National Football League is drunk unfit to know when to say when to the Beer Men they create childish characters like the Budweiser frogs and lizards to advance the seductive message that beer is happy food cool suds the macho life of the o party The Beer Men Mr Jenkins refers to also include Coors Miller whose and Anheuser-BuscTV ads with cutesports-relate- d sy characters are aimed at youth Mr Jenkins words struck a chord with me since I have long felt beer gets a free ride We na-ch- h PAT CAPSON BROWN regulate tobacco advertising by banishing it from television requiring warning labels on cigarette packs and by getting rid of Joe Camel on the premise that he appeals to children We are poised to take billions from tobacco companies for endangering public health We control the advertising of hard liquor at least to a degree more so in some states than others One see ads in magazines from liquor companies discouraging youthful drinking urging moderation and encouraging the use of a designated driver All good moves Yet beer drinkers are somehow considered harmless Peter Pans who never grow up and live in a constant Happy Hour Ask the wife whose husband doesnt drink except for his k Ask the husband whose wife thinks the p program doesnt include her Bud six-pac- Ask me Before you judge me a prude or a member of the Eagle Forum know this: A federal study estimates junior and senior high school students consume 11 billion beers each year Some years ago my son was one of those high school students With his first innocent beer he began a battle with alcohol that he never won He died at 40 After his death a number of people close friends and otherwise felt free to approach me and reveal they had suffered the same loss or were dealing with the same grievous problem It is a problem usually invisible on the surface but capable of tearing a marriage or a family apart at the seams Im convinced there are lots of people who can enjoy a beer and not get in trouble Im also convinced that for those with a weakness for alcohol beer often leads to stronger stuff And Im convinced that the NFL should get out of the beer TV spot business A during the Super Bowl cost $13 million and reached 130 million viewers Thats a lot of beer Way too much ADDENDUM: The day after I wrote this column an article appeared in The Salt Lake Tribune reporting that a group including the Utah Medical Association the PTA and the Alcohol Policy Coalition had urged SLOC officials to ban an official beer at the 2002 Olympics They felt beer advertising was designed to attract young drinkers (Beer or alcoholic beverages would not be banned but they could not be connected to Olympic advertising) Way to go Now lets keep religion out of this argument and do whats best for the kids ADDENDUM NO 2: On Wednesday The Salt Lake Tribune reported that Budweiser' will pay $50 million to be the official beer of the 2002 Winter Olympics Pat Capson Brown is a freelance winter in Salt Lake City |
