Lake Gallery Association stages a progressive party only this party doesnt require an invitation and theres no need to RSVP The ' monthly Gallery Stroll from 6 to 9 pm is open to everyone More than 24 galleries join under the auspices of the Salt Lake Gallery Association (organized in 1983) As a group they exhibit a variety of crafts sculpture and fine art by Utah and national artists Besides the monthly Gallery Stroll the association has pro- duced street banners and wall' murals downtown Phantom Galleries and programs for youth Each gallery adds its flavor to the mix would take some fast tracking for a stroller to make it through all the galleries in a single evening For a more leisurely pace see the galleries in dusters Here is a sampling: This month starting at the Do- lores Chase Gallery 260 S 200 West one can view contemporary art in a sleek and elegant interior The Chase Gallery is featuring monotypes of Brigham Young University-educateartist Brian Kershisnik Kershisniks subjects animals and humans in a dream landscape more defined by spirit than matter his rich warm colors and playful shapes create an art that is highly original in its world view In a new location adjoining the Chase Gallery David Ericksons f- Jr-- if S'l-wT- 4V Pacific Islander art is on display Gallery 56 exhibits Utah landscape and figurative work by artists Randall Lake Dennis Smith and Lee Bennion among others In contrast with the more modern work of the Chase Gallery Gallery 56 also features the work of early Utah painters like John Ha-fe- n or JT Harwood revealing continuity in themes and techniques in the history of Utah art Two buildings to the north back 50 feet from the sidewalk the Left Bank Gallery is a alternative venue for artists seeking exposure An artist p the Left Banks space is a refurbished garage with concrete floors and tall ceilings It provides a neutral backdrop for the display of art that is sometimes fresh and original other times disturbing and challenging It is different from that exhibited either at the Chase Gallery or Gal 'll well-lighte- d d co-o- f at Art Access Gallery Steve GriffiaTbe lery 56 Each gallery encourages the viewer to consider art from a different vantage point and recommends other ways to measure the world At this point circle the block to the south and then the west to approach Artspace housed in the old Farmers Market Artspace is an institution and a community It is backed by a nonprofit corporation that helps develop vital and diverse neighborhoods by creating affordable housing and work space for artists and others Established 18 years ago Artspace is a combination of studio space and living space It is also home to several nonprofit organizations such as the Salt Lake Acting Company the Utah Arts Festival and the Homeless Childrens Foundation On Gallery Stroll night several Art in a clean Sait Laitf Tribune place: The Dolores Chase Gallery in Salt Lake City well-light- ed artists studios open to the public as well as galleries located along the way On March 20 Art Access will feature artists from the Pacific in an exhibit titled Gifts of the Sea (Tirltiri O Te Moana) opening that night This promises to be a real party artists Mataumu Alisa Les Cal-Ie- s Taniela Niu Edwin Napia Lupe A Niumeitolu and Niumeitolu will be there refreshments and music will create a festive welcoming environment Also opening that night Views of Italy by Jean Arnold will be on display in Bibliotect new space at Artspace at 329 W Pierpont Ave Arnold produced these paintings while in residence in central Italy Vai-Moa- Architec-tureBookstor- Enamored of the medieval hilltop towns her work depicts her relationship with the land As a speciality bookstore Bibliotect provides the best selection in town of books on art and architecture and is also the scene of numerous presentations on local issues concerning the built environment urban planning and art and architecture The artists of the Guthrie Building on 156 E and 200 South are holding Open Studio the same night as the Gallery Stroll Here is a chance to visit an artists studio and perhaps more important another type of artists community At the Guthrie art spills out into common space the halls and stairwell become an intriguing and engaging part of the experience The Guthrie artists include Randall Lake Meredith Moench Bonnie Sucec Susan Beck and John Erickson among others Refreshments of various sorts are freely offered by most of the participating galleries on Gallery Stroll night enhancing the party atmosphere You can meet many of the artists showing in these galleries talk to them about their work and enjoy it Diversity more than anything else marks the evening a reminder of the richness that lies just Utah Utah Contemporary Dance Theatre performs at Kingsbury Hall University of Utah Friday at 7:30 pm and Saturday at 2 and 7:30 pm Tickets available through ArtTix are $12 $16 and $20 Contemporary Dance Theatres annual spring concert at the University of Utahs Kingsbury Hall this week Sledgehammer is artistic director Yeagers tribute to the common man It relates to the common guys just trying to hang on one more said Yeager from Orem day where his jazzballet company is based g The suite is set in an industrial blue-collworld and features the music of Peter Gabri- it provides an excellent underpinning for movement and and choreography Most of the music is from Gabriels album So one of its hit songs was Sledgehammer Yeager believes Sledgehammer will ultimately be the signature piece for the company he founded in 1994 The program also will feature Mobile the work by the late Tomm Ruud The piece a study in balance and grace will be staged for Utah Contemporary Dance Theatre by Christopher Ruud son of the and a company member six-son- el Another Tomm Ruud created Mobile in 1969 when he was a graduate student at the University of Utah Later it was presented by Pallet West of which Ruud was a member before joining the San Francisco Ballet Ballet West last presented it in 1986 the U of Us Utah Ballet Company presented it in 1996 as a tribute to Ruud who died in 1994 best-know- n Gabriels music is so expressive and he has such a wonderful poetic ability to capture the es- sence of the common working mans plight as he struggles to survive said Yeager Not only is it
