Show it --- 1 e THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE Sunday April 28 1953 ! Unconcerned U S Miners Held Metals Duty Foes 1 4 r By Observer i Recently in this column the annual report of the American Metal Co furnished the figures Indicating the fact that the company vigorous Opponent of the sliding scale equalization Import duty on lead and zinc realized far more income from foreign dividends and operations than from domestic operations American Metal Co in continuing its opposition particularly with our national legislators—by telegraph and post— bas listed nine arguments against the proposed duty Otto Herres chairman of the CommitNational Lead-Zin- c tee during the past week in answered these Washington nine arguments' The first three substantially alike stressed the fact that imports of lead and zinc from 1940 to 1952 represented 30 and 27 per cent of Itotal U S demand To this Herres pointed out that during this period of World War II the Korean War and rearmament the United States was the "Great Arsenal of Democracy" and yet produced the major proportion of its needs and at the same time supported much of the free world Quote on Point 4 As to point 4 Herres said "Contrary to American Metars assertion that the proponents of the Simpson and Dawson bills are marginal producers the sliding scale tax is supported by virtually the enmining industry tire lead-zinof the United States" With respect to point 5 questioning the closing of mines and unemployment the answer was that figures speak for themselves For instance domestic mine production in terms of recoverable zinc has dropped some 10000 tons a month below a year ago To the allegation—point 5— t I- i tt t g g F i I t i t g 1 1 1 ' - c New WAL Fliahts Fly Out Today The speedy Convairliners of Western Air ILines will be inaugurated into service Sunday between Salt Lake City Pocatello Idaho Falls and Butte and Great Falls Montana First flight of the plane is scheduled to depart from the Salt Lake City Airport Sunday at 8 am with Brenton AV Jennings chairman of the Salt Lake City Chamber of Commerce aviation committee aboard to represent the city at inauguration ceremonies along the way The plane will make scheduled stops at Pocatello Idaho Falls and Butte and arrive at Great Falls at 11:30 am 300-mp- h NOTICE that the duty would exclude needed imports it was pointed out that with the elimination of the duty at 1514 cents per pound and the duty on only 70 per cent of the lead and only 60 per cent of the zinc in concentrates it would encourage such needed imports As for point 7—which dealt with theories that the declines of zinc-leaprices was not due to imports it was shown that they were directly attributable to the dumping of very large e tonnages of imports on the American market Will Gain More In the American Metal argument (No 8) on 'closing the dollar gap with unlimited imports Herres declared that simple arithmetic shows that foreign nations will gain more by selling us 300000 tons of zinc for example in a stabilized market than by dumping 400000 tons at distress prices and destroying 100000 tons of domestic mining Finally—item 10—the American Metal figures shown are for the war and international crisis years and what they will show if and when some degree of stability is restored and world competition returns yet to be determined—that the large increase in imports emphasizes the dumping of foreign materials on our markets Summing up the American Metal opposition the Utahn said: "American Metal Co Ltd although little concerned with the fate of the American miner is most solicitous for the American consumer as befits a leading custom smelter the bulk of whose production comes from the processing of raw materials received from others Not Likely Action "It is not likely that the American people will permit an industry essential to national defense to be destroyed by the imports dumping of in our markets "Something might be learned from the present difficulties of those countries which are not favored with the great natural resources our country possesses to support its vast industries Our great wealth derived from the mines and the soil provides the nation's manufacturers with the richest and most profitable market on earth for what they have to sell" TO CONTRACTORS ' 4 ''''''''''''"-1121- ' '4 0 '14 owl : '1 e ' 41rrir''' It71 'X 1' 1 J - 1 4 r : ' 4 ' s 41 : 4 INN ' : '- : - ' 4 s NOTICE notice Is explosion of a meteorite against the earth but by "natural" geologic developments An article of his in the April bulletin of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists contends that despite early geological theories and stories told tourists "every step (in his) new investigation for new evidence of a geologic origin (of the crater) has been found and none of meteoritic origin" "The cumulative evidence for a geologic origin seems to be overwhelming" the Salt Laker writes He suggests that if geologists really wish to fix by additional evidence the history and origin of the crater a series of drill holes should be sunk on the rim and in the basin of the crater While Mr Hager does not accept the theory of meteoritic origin for the crater he does not rule out all other theories But he appears to lean toward the idea that the crater may have resulted from a subsidience of the earth caused by collapse of a huge subsurface salt plug The geologist infers that an explanation for presence of meteoritic 'material in the crater is found in fact that a big meteor fell in the general area '50000 to 150000 years ago" Prtidential 'Loansl $712698 in Utah Lease Bids Open For Phosphate underground hoist on the 1800- foot level of the Chief No 1 mine Eureka This hoist which has a capacity four times greater than the replaced gear cost $93000 The total project cost is $145- 000 according to Cecil Fitch Jr vice president and general manager The hoist is installed in the 18411 winz e (underground level shaft) from the 1800-foo- t Deepen rinse Mr Fitch said that "present operating plans are to deepen the 18411 winze from its present 2827-foo- t level to the 3100- foot level Our present lowest operating level is the 2700-foo- t level (2700 feet beim! the surface elevation) "The new hoist is capable of a vertical lift of 3000 feet or from what would be our 4800- foot level" he said Mr Fitch said the "increase in rope speed coupled with double cake arrangement will increase our hoisting capacity by four times that of the replaced hoist" Double-DruHoist The new hoist is a Vulcan-Denve- r double cylindrical drum hoist with oil operated post brakes and dental clutches for each drum It has a 20500- pound rope pull compared with a rope pull of the hoist it replaces hoist normally in balance is powered by two 200 ltp 600 motors providing a rope speed of 1000 feet a minute The old hoist had a 125 hp motor with a rope speed of 500 feet a minute 11 had only a maximum hoisting depth of 1000 feet Post brakes and band clutch were with improvised Lilly controls Open Stoping Method Excavation for the new underground hoist was accomplished by open stoping Precautionary roof bolting was utilized in critical areas Some 2130 cubic yards of material was removed for the entry drift hoist room switch room rope raise and raising of the 18411 winze above the sill of the 1800-foo- t level About 95 cubic yards of concrete was poured into the hoist foundation floor and shive 78 Some wheel foundation cubic yards of concrete was mixed and batched on the surface and lowered to the 1800- foot level and carried a distance of 2800 feet The remaining concrete was mixed underground 18 Feet High The hoist room is 42 feet by 45 feet and has an average height of 18 feet Mr Fitch said that the erection of the hoist underground required lowering of all equipment a vertical distance of 1800 feet and transporting it level for along the 1800-foo- t more than a quarter of a mile The dimensions of the No 1 shaft required that the hoist machinery be constructed in sections so that all parts would pass through an opening 43 inches by 4712 inches Heaviest piece of machinery was the hoist 'shaft which weighed 612 tons an was 24 Western Gold Mines Inc feet 8 inches
