Show THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Volume VI, Issue X Page 5 September 1, 2002 Registration Forms Available for Single Moms’ Conference Zions Bank is proud to sponsor the Single Moms’ Conference presented by the Bringing Hope to Single Moms Foundation. The fourth annual event brings single mothers from throughout Utah together to learn life and job skills, find resources, network and set goals. The all-day conference will be held at Granite High School in Salt Lake City on Saturday, September 14. The pre-registration fee is just $1, thanks to Greenbacks/All a Dollar, the founding sponsor of the Bringing Hope to Single Moms Foundation. Registration forms are available at Zions Bank branch locations throughout Utah, Greenbacks/All a Dollar locations, and online at www.bringinghope.net To help ease the burden for mothers to attend, the conference also provides access to free childcare for early registrants. In addition, transportation and carpools to the Salt Lake City conference will be provided from statewide hubs. Mothers may call (801) 9777781 for advance information on childcare and transportation. “The single mother issue is probably one of the great issues of our country, and it is not being addressed. Too many single moms feel alone,” said Karen Mecham, executive director of the Bringing Hope to Single Moms Foundation. “The Single Moms’ Conference is an opportunity for us to show women that people really do care.” From legal issues and debt management, to parenting skills, the conference provides single mothers with a wide range of topics presented by recognized professionals. Moms will learn how to find a workplace mentor, how to build a relationship with a reputable car mechanic, and how to cut the grocery budget. In addition, select sessions on education and immigration are presented in Spanish. “Besides the skills they learn at this conference, single mothers discover how, if other people can do it, so can they. They find the light at the end of the tunnel,” Mecham said. Last year, almost 900 women attended the Single Moms’ Conference. This year, organizers hope for a group of 1,300. Following the conference, attendees are encouraged to join the Bringing Hope to Single Moms 10-week program, which pairs them with helpful mentors who have experienced single motherhood. “As a community bank, Zions is promoting the conference in our branches because we want to reach out to single moms throughout the state, to let them know that resources for them are available,” said LeeAnne Linderman, Zions Bank senior vice president. “When a single mother finds the support she needs to succeed, it benefits society as a whole.” Share the Harvest A nationwide economic crunch seems to also have had an effect on local food banks. Supplies of needed foodstuffs are critically low. Share the Harvest is a volunteer, nonprofit organization that provides food that might be wasted, or go unused, to those in need in our community. Farmers and gardeners donate their surplus produce, while local businesses support the program. Last year collected produce was distributed to four sites in Ogden, supplying over 2000 families with fresh produce. Here is how you can help: When planting gardens in the future, plant a little bit extra so you can give to the program. Call 801-476-8060 to have some- one come pick your surplus produce, or to have someone come pick up already picked produce. Come help us pick, bag, and/or distribute the food. Meet at the First Presbyterian Church, 880 28th Street at 8:00 a.m. on: September 8 and 15 — to glean the fields. September 9 and 16 — to bag and distribute the food. Also, Joshua Johnson of Liberty 2nd Ward, Troop 215 is collecting produce to donate to the Ogden Rescue Mission for his Eagle Scout project. If you can help, please call Joshua at 745-2435. Weber County Law Library Moves The Weber County Law Library has been moved from the Weber Center to the second floor of the Weber County Main Branch Library located at 2464 Jefferson Avenue in Ogden. The Law Library is open 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and from September to May, Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The consolidation of Law Library materials at one location is expected to benefit users by providing access to legal materials in electronic format, as well as providing access to the vast historical legal collection housed at the Main Branch Library. Have Your Well Water Tested For Free Your local Weber Soil Conservation District is sponsoring a free ground water testing program for residents who own their own water supplies—wells, springs, and other ground water systems. The water will be tested for bacteria, pesticides, nitrate, and minerals. For more information, contact Mark Quilter, Utah Department of Agriculture and Food, at 801-538-9905. Two New Principals Appointed for the School Year Students from Ogden Valley will begin the school year with a new principal and assistant principal being assigned to Valley Elementary and Weber High School respectively.
