Show Volume VI, Issue X THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 7 September 1, 2002 LIVE! Music @ Your Library: Music Fest 2002 Kicks off at Ogden Valley Branch Library The hills will be alive with the sounds of cultural diversity at Ogden Valley Branch Library in Huntsville throughout the month of September during the annual Music Fest. A series of FREE music concerts will be held weekly in the library courtyard—outside, under the stars. Fresh-popped popcorn, ice-cold lemonade, and treats will be provided at each of the familystyle shows. All performances begin at 6:30 p.m. For more information, call the Ogden Valley Branch Library at 745-2220. September 9: Jenna Land The series kicks off with an original voice from the Huntsville community. Jenna Land, a local resident originally from northern California, has performed as a solo artist and with her band LUX for the past eight years. Her songwriting resonates with the influences of Joni Mitchell and Patti Griffin, while adding her own provocative homegrown flavor. In a recent JUNCTION Magazine feature article, Linda East Brady wrote: “Complex loveliness may be the best way to sum up singer/songwriter Jenna Land. Her melodies and vocal styling soar with aching beauty.” Jenna’s performance in the library courtyard will feature a selection of original songs from her upcoming album, What Jane Wants, which Jenna plans to release on her independent label, Rocky Mountain Sweetheart. Along with finishing a novel and touring with her band LUX, Jenna is in the process of relocating to Santa Fe, New Mexico. There she hopes to incorporate aspects of the Latin and Native American cultures into her eclectic style. “Jenna carries herself with a confidence which is electrifying but also with an intriguing innocence that keeps the listener clinging to every airy note, hoping to catch the one anomaly that makes her music such an enjoyable experience—only to find that it’s not an emotion that is simply defined. Jenna is certainly an entertainment powerhouse and a quickly rising star who we haven’t heard the last of.” —David Baur/NBC Later Show with Cynthia Garrett September 16: Ogden Concert Band The Ogden Concert Band has been the official band of Ogden City since 1993. With approximately fifty performers, the members play as volunteers and musical ambassadors for the city of Ogden. The group performs both modern and traditional band music and is directed by Tom Root of Weber State University. The band traces its heritage back to the Pitt Brass Band, which accompanied pioneer settlers to Utah. For more information, visit the band’s website at: www.ogdencity.com/index.cfm/ogden arts.band September 23: Weber River Blues Band You can be assured of a good time when this sextet of local talent plays their brand of traditional and original blues music. Their diverse selection of musical styles ranges from down home delta blues to a classic house-rockin’ sound. The broad spectrum of musical genres allows the band to please all kinds of audiences. They have developed a solid reputation over the past two years playing the regional circuit across northern Utah and Wyoming, including a live performance on Salt Lake’s non-profit radio station KRCL. Band members include: Troy “Beast” from the East on drums, “Johnny Snakeskin” on harmonica, Brandt “burnin’ fingers” Bodily on guitar, Devon “Chops” Lewis on saxophone, “Hot Carl” Racker on bass guitar, and Ryan “Fathead” Hawthorn on guitar and vocals. For more information—and to download free sample MP3 recordings—visit the band’s website at: www.weberriverblues.com September 30: Georgia Barretto Classical guitar and a bossa nova beat accompany the sultry voice of this singer/songwriter with a recently released CD, Sensibilidade. Baretto comes naturally to her art, having been raised in a guitar-playing family in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Baretto’s parents were both teachers; her father taught classical guitar and her mother taught popular guitar. Baretto displayed her talent at a young age, and has been performing professionally since she was 17. Baretto moved to Los Angeles to develop her career, and then found her way to Ogden to be with family. Baretto has been developing a reputation locally for giving memorable performances. The Salt Lake Tribune described her as, “a dreamy mix of classical guitar, Bossa Nova stylings and breathy bilingual vocals.” A Standard-Examiner feature article by music critic Mark Saal identified Baretto as, “A Poet With a Guitar.” In the article, Steve Williams, jazz director of KUER 90.1 FM, lauds Baretto’s talent and concludes, “She was born with the music in her.” For more information, visit the Georgia Baretto website at: www.georgiabaretto.com Ogden/Weber Chamber of Commerce Spikers Attend Ribbon Cutting Ceremony in Huntsville On August 1, property owners Jeff and Bonnie Hyde hosted the Ogden/Weber Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting ceremony at their Rendezvous Lodge and Yukon Grille in Huntsville. The Chamber Spikers toured the new facilities, enjoying the improvements made to the buildings surrounding Huntsville’s old town square. Following the tour, many chamber members enjoyed an old-fashioned horse and buggy ride through the town, courtesy of Leon Harrison’s “Lakeside Carriage Service.” Later on, Spikers relaxed with dinner and music at the Yukon Grille, located in Huntsville’s old Post Office, where they were treated to a live musical performance by western singer and songwriter Gary Russell. Russell was featured on Martha Stewart’s 2000 Christmas Special, and has worked for over 40 years as a country music artist. Earl Cherry is the owner of the restaurant business.
