Bill Barber of Nordic Valley states that his is to provoke feelings of emotion, beauty, and drama from others. “I have a desire to tell a story, and to put my subjects into mood, lighting, or places that move the spirit.” An award winning sculptor and painter, Barber related that he has been interested in creating artwork for a very long time. He sold his first oil painting at the age of ten. Pursuing steps to fulfill his first experiences, and the flashes of images that I receive.” Unlike many artists, these images come solely from images he perceives with his mind’s eye. A prolific fulltime artist who recently moved to the Valley with his wife Janice, Barber has created over 3000 paintings and many sculptures. He has also worked on 65 movie and television productions over the years, about half of this work has been for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on monumental projects such as “The Testament.” His last project was an IMAX production “Lewis and Clark.” Barber’s numerous awards include 1st Place in painting and sculpture at various invitational shows, including the Grand Champion Silver Spurs from the Winnemucca Roundup Show that he attended last year. Barber’s name can also be found in the Harold and Peggy Samuels book “Contemporary Western Artist.” Bill credits his success to a very supportive wife, and the talents given childhood goal, of becoming a writer, Barber became a voracious reader when just a child. “I sensed at a very young age that to be an artist, whether writing or painting, I would need a lot of experience to draw from. What I couldn’t experience for myself, I tried to compensate for by reading books.” Barber’s diverse background and life experiences—prospector, horse wrangler, cowboy, movie producer, sailor, and navigator—are reflected in his artwork. Some of his creations also depict his deep spiritual convictions.
