Browning Center The Ogden Symphony Ballet Association kicks off the most ambitious and varied season in its 51-year history with a Masterworks Concert on Thursday, September 20, followed by a “Blast from the Past” at the dedication of the Ogden Plaza Amphitheater on Saturday, September 22. Staring the internationally acclaimed Utah Symphony Orchestra with Musical Director Keith Lockhart conducting, the first of five Masterworks Concerts will showcase one of America’s premier instrumental ensembles, the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Val A. Browning Center at Weber State University. A pre-concert lecture, offering insights to the performance, will be held at 6:45 in room 113. The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet is known for both their virtuosity and their versatility. They have been featured throughout the U.S., Europe, Canada, and Asia, and have appeared on CNN, CBS, and the Arts and Entertainment Channel. The members of the quartet rotate the “first chair” demonstrating each member’s particular strength. John Deaman is an eclectic guitarist whose repertoire ranges from samba to bluegrass to flamenco to classical. He is best known for his performance on a unique seven-string guitar. Scott Tennant is the First Prize winner in the Tokyo International Competition in 1989 and the author of “Pumping Nylon,” a best-selling technical handbook for the classical guitarist. He is also a guitar-faculty member at USC. Voted “Best Classical Album” in the 1994 Guitar Player Magazine readers’ poll, Andrew York’s CD “Denouement” illustrated his groundbreaking style as a composer and guitarist. York recently filmed a video for the Mel Bay Artist Series. Acclaimed soloist, recording artist and faculty member at USC, William Kanengiser is one of the few guitarists to have won the Concert Artists Guild New York Competition. He is also noted for his expertise in Old World and Caribbean music. The program will consist of music from Ravel’s “Alborada del grazioso, “Ridrigo’s “Concierto Andaluz,” Rouse’s “Rapture,” and Rospighi’s “Church Windows.” Ticket prices are $16.00 to $24.00, and may be purchased at the OSBA ticket office at 638 East 26th Street, or by calling 399-9214, or one hour prior to performance at the Browning Center Box Office. Students with valid ID can purchase tickets for $5.00 one hour prior to performance at the Box Office. The Swanson Foundation, the Hemmingway Foundation, and media sponsors Junction Magazine and KLO Radio sponsored this performance. The Ogden Symphony Association is also proud to present a free concert featuring “The Headliner’s” at the dedication of the Ogden Plaza Amphitheater on Saturday, September 22, at 6:30 p.m. The “Blast from the Past” program will consist of the Big Band sound of the Woody Herman Orchestra, the “hot, Subscriptions available for out of area residents at $18.00 annually. An international performing and recording star with eleven recording titles to his credit, Peplowksi recently released his latest, “Last Swing of the Century, the Big Band Music of Benny Goodman.” Completing the program will be the “Nation’s number one vocal and instrumental quartet,” according to a 1966 Billboard poll. The Four Freshman, who have topped music charts since their first hit “It’s A Blue World” in 1950, bring audiences of all ages their unique sound— from the excitement of swing to the beauty of ballads. With more than 70 singles and albums, The Four Freshman segment will feature their standards like “Route 66,” “How Can I Tell Her,” “Day by Day,” and perennial favorite “Graduation Day.” Original member Bob Flanigan is now the group’s manager, and he makes sure the “new” Four Freshman remain true to the original sound. Brian Eichenberger sings lead tenor while playing bass guitar and piano; Vince Johnson, second tenor, plays guitar, trombone, and bass; baritone Greg Stegeman plays keyboard, flugelhorn, trumpet and valve trombone; and Bob Ferreira sings bass as well as playing drums and flugelhorn. The Ogden Symphony Ballet Association, with funding by the Steward Educational Foundation, is excited to participate in this landmark dedication. Woody Herman lead one of the most consistently popular and artistically innovative big bands in jazz for over 50 years when he combined his band’s light, crisp style of the traditional big band with the progressive talents of American composers, creating its own unique sound, latter to be known as “bebop” jazz. Always a pace-setter, the Orchestra broke new ground when it premiered Russian-born American composer Igor Stravinsky’s “Ebony Concerto” at Carnegie Hall in 1946. The Woody Herman Orchestra timeless, ever-evolving style has kept winning not only high critical acclaim and Grammy Awards, but also new fans of all ages. Most of the credit for this continued success goes to Frank Tiberi, whom Woody himself designated the musical director in the band in 1987. A virtuoso clarinetist in the Benny Goodman tradition, Ken Peplowski, was, in fact, a member of Goodman’s last working orchestra, has been described by the “New York Times” as “Goodman straight up with a twist of lightening.” Peplowski began his professional career at age ten making local radio and television appearances. He played orchestral and jazz arrangements in the Cleveland area before joining the Tommy Dorsey Band under the direction of Buddy Morrow in 1979, and has since performed with Mel Torme, Peggy Lee, Hank Jones, Scott Hamilton, Rosemary Clooney, and Steve Allen.
