Show Volume IV, Issue XI THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 5 September 15, 2001 Olympic Volunteer Opportunities Available for Weber County Residents One of the more important aspects for the Olympics is to provide an exciting and positive experience for the people of our community that allows them to take part in this world class event, and experience the “spirit of the games.” For many people, that will come in the forms of volunteerism. Here are just some of the volunteer opportunities that will exist in our community during the Olympic timeframe. Visitor Information service Guide: Will provide services as information specialists throughout the community including on site at the Snowbasin and Ice Sheet venues. There are also possible opportunities as guides on the buses that will transport Olympic ticket holders from the park-n-ride lots on Highway 89 to the Snowbasin Ski resort. All volunteers will be expected to work 40 hours and a minimum of five days between February 8 and March 16. Some lifting may be necessary, and the work will require standing for long periods. Applications are available at the Visitor Information Services offices at 2501 Wall Ave., Ogden, or by calling 801-627-8291. Olympic Torch Relay: Volunteers will assist with the “arrival of the torch” community celebration in downtown Ogden on February 6, the Torch Relay caravan that accompanies the Torchrunners, and the route the Torchrunners will take through Weber County the evening of the sixth and the morning of the seventh. Applications are available through Tonia Wilson/Weber County Commission Office at 2380 Washington Blvd., Ogden, or by calling 801-399-8418. Spirit of the West Festival: The Olympics may be in Salt Lake, but the party is in Ogden! Volunteers will be needed to help with setup or tear down, overseeing festival activities, checking credentials, dispensing beverages, etc., for the Festival on February 9 in Ogden. Call Ogden City Special Events at 801629-8242. Ogden/Weber County Night at the Medals Plaza: One thousand free tickets will be given to our community for people to attend the medals ceremony at the Medals Plaza in Salt Lake City on February 22. That night the Weber County community will be honored and highlighted in the pre-medal presentations with a spotlight on our community’s local musical entertainment, presentations by our local elected officials, etc. Volunteers will be needed to coordinate auditions for local musical entertainment, plan and execute distribution of tickets, coordinate bus transportation and a celebratory tailgate party prior to traveling to the Medals Plaza on the night of the 22. Applications are available through Emily Boren/Weber County Human Resources at 2380 Washington Blvd., Ogden, or by calling 801-3998624. These volunteer opportunities are community volunteer opportunities and not related to volunteering for the Salt Lake Organizing Committee (SLOC). Dates sand times of service are flexible, depending on the responsibility.
