Monte Cristo Highway Opens for Season The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) advises motorists and outdoor recreation enthusiasts that state Road 39, the Monte Cristo Highway, will open to all traffic for the spring and summer season at midnight, Friday, June 7. SR-39 will open from milepost 37, the Ant Flat parking lot east of Huntsville, to milepost 56, near Woodruff in Rich County. Once the gates are opened, the roadway between these two points will remain open until late next fall. The remainder of this route is open year around. This route opened about two weeks later than usual this year due to the extremely deep snow fall this past winter. Off of the roadway, snow is still deep and most campgrounds are snowbound. Motorists and recreationalists are urged to use caution when leaving SR-39. This section of the Monte Cristo Highway is closed for the winter months between these points each season due to motorist safety concerns, and the prohibitive cost of keeping it open to winter traffic. The roadway is opened each spring once winter weather conditions have generally subsided. Motorists are advised, however, that winter storms may still occur at the highest elevations on this highway well into the summer months, so they should always be prepared for this when traveling this route. For information about Utah road conditions 24-hours per day, visit the UDOT Traffic Website at http://udottraffic.utah.gov, or download the free Utah Traffic App, available for download by most mobile devices. SCRAMBLE cont. on page 7 Illegal Nightly Rentals Becoming Big Problem in Unincorporated OV units rented for less than 30 days at a time to the By Shanna Francis Under Weber County’s land use code, nightly rentals—often referred to as Airbnbs sleeping rooms, or short-term rentals—are illegal in most residential zones in Ogden Valley. Even so, they seem to be cropping up just about anywhere and everywhere, with property owners seeing them as a fast way to earn some extra cash, or a way of making the house payment on a second home that may have been purchased as an investment. And some realtors don’t seem interested in letting clients know that this practice may be an illegal use of the home, as many listings even suggest this option. A recent shooting at a possibly illegal Airbnb in Eden shed light on this problem, where some nightly rentals can have a reputation as “party homes.” A quick “Google” search of nightly or short-term rentals in Ogden Valley will pull up a number of residential homes being used for nightly rentals. Weber County’s land use code defines short-term/nightly rentals as homes or Thursday, June 6, about 150 volunteers arrived in Ogden Valley to help eradicate dyer’s woad—100 youth, ages 14 to 18, and their leaders. The large army of young people is part of the Layton, Utah Creekside Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Stake. They traveled to Ogden Valley to take part in a Youth Conference being held at North Fork Park. On their way, before heading up to Cutler Flats to set up their tents, they stopped at the Eden Park bowery to receive instruction from Weber County Road Department crew leader Jared Clontz, who instructed the youth on the best way to remove the weed so it wouldn’t grow back. The youth also collected garbage as part of the service they were rendering. The youth and their leaders spread out and went to work, primarily along county Highway 166 in Eden, and alongside roads and Ogden and dug out the weed, which is still in its flowering stage. Weber County Commissioner Gage Froerer worked with the group’s leader, Scott Weske to arrange the service project. A few local citizens passionate about eradicating dyer’s woad also showed up to help. The community would like to thank this group of Layton volunteers for their generous service, and would like to continue to ask Valley property owners to keep up the effort to remove the weed from their property and its boundary areas. If you are frustrated at your efforts at eradicating the weed, which may seem futile at times, be aware that while your efforts may seem ineffective, an understanding of the plant’s ability to reproduce itself season after season—for seven years from an initial seed YOUTH GROUP cont. on page 3 same tenant.
