Show Volume XXV Issue VIII The Ogden Valley news Page 7 June 15, 2018 Who in the “Heck” is Mountain Maggie? Mountain Maggie first appeared at the home of Lysle and Zella Chard of Liberty. She appeared around the time of Halloween and, in those days, she was very scary! Many community members who are now adults remember being terrified of her. Today’s children, who see countless horror movies, would not be afraid of a character whose scariest features were a fake nose and glasses and grey wig, but Mountain Maggie was always frighteningly silent, standing among the cottonwoods in the darkness, her cape blowing in the breeze, her stance somehow threatening. She was, however, a friend of the Chards or “conjured Original Mountain up” by them. You Maggie. see, the Chards loved children and could have none of their own. Consequently, they were always planning little parties and surprises for the local children. Mountain Maggie must have been one of these “surprises.” When the Chards passed away, they left a very large estate to the Weber School Foundation to promote sports among the youth of Ogden Valley. Every year, principals of the two schools still utilize a portion of these funds. We honor the Chards for exemplifying the spirit that the Community Foundation of Ogden Valley promotes: LlVE HERE. When Community Foundation of Ogden Valley (CFOV) was formed, they adopted Mountain Maggie as a mascot and a symbol of true giving, which the Chards exemplified; however, they also modernized her. While she still wears the same Charlie Chaplin glasses, mustache, and fake nose and a grey wig and cape, she also wears a mini-skirt and soccer socks, making her a bit more “sporty.” This year, Mountain Maggie is wearing her golf “outfit” because CFOV is holding a golf tournament August 11 as a fundraiser for all the wonderful nonprofits that serve this valley and A 27-year-old male was booked into the Weber County jail on a DUI charge after he crashed his 1997 black Ford F250 in Ogden Canyon. Out of control, the vehicle left the highway and came to rest in the river, about 20 feet down from the road, taking out a few trees on the way down. The accident occurred May 28 at about 4:00 p.m. No one was injured in the accident, but traffic was closed for about a half hour while a crew worked to extricate the truck. Announcements Obituaries Eleanor Lela LordsGoodenough July 11, 1921 ~ May 24, 2018 Eleanor Lela Lords-Goodenough was born in Preston Idaho on the July 11, 1921, and went to heaven May 24, 2018. Elle, as she preferred to be called, was one of fourteen children—she had many brothers and sisters whom she loved dearly, and passed before her. Her father was (John) William Lords and her mother was Hannah Olive Anderson-Lords. Elle was married to Glen Goodenough, November 2, 1915 – February 10, 1978. Elle is the mother of Howard Goodenough (wife Joan) and children Suzie Goodenough (Justin), Tricia Pollock (Tom), Jodi Goodenough-Pate (Jason), Glenda Young (husband Terry), Clint, Troy and Terri Young, and Linda Nordsven (husband Don); children, Brad Horsley (Michelle), Stacey Hansen (Jeff), and Shelly Horsley. Elle has many grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. Our favorite memories of her are that she was interested in natural health and that she was always researching what Dr. Whitaker recommended and she became quite knowledgeable about supplements. She absolutely adored Jack LaLanne and she got her daughter-in-laws and NEW HOURS: Open 7 Days Accommodates 50-60 guests granddaughters to do Yoga and to be interested in fitness and natural health. Elle’s family loved her homemade noodles, scones, wheat puff treats, and fruitcake and we will all be making them often in memory of her. Elle loved to dance and passed that love along to all the daughters, granddaughters, and great-grandkids too. Elle loved cats and made sure they had special food and a home and lots of love. Her home was always open for an impromptu family party and game of cards, which she loved so much and she would always make everyone feel welcome and like they were part of the family. Elle was full of life and love and had a comforting home and heart; her traditions continue to be enjoyed and shared with each generation of her family, which continues her legacy. We are sure that she was welcomed to heaven by all her loved ones who passed before her. Her family on earth will miss her but we will continue to honor her and to have her spirit live on each time we cook, dance, and love each other because Elle taught us that family is the most important thing, and opening our hearts and homes and spending time together is what truly matters in life. We love you forever Elle. Graveside services were held June 1, 2018 at Memorial Redwood Mortuary and Cemetery, 6500 S. Redwood Road, West Jordan, Utah.
