Show Page 4 The Ogden Valley news Volume XXV Issue VIII June 15, 2018 WSU Brings Arts and Science Education to Local Parks Weber State have giant bubbles, rocket demonstrations and University will offer free opportunities to learn about art and science during this summer’s Arts in the Parks and Science in the Parks, held weekdays this summer through July 20. The programs will travel to six different parks throughout Ogden, offering five days of activities at each location. The sessions are hosted from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and are open to everyone. Each day coincides with the Ogden City School District’s free summer lunch program, which means participants 18 and younger can get a lunch for no charge. “Our goal is to offer free summer activities to youth and parents who are generally considered underserved,” said Todd Oberndorfer, Arts in the Parks co-director. “As this program reaches large numbers of youth within walking distance of their homes, Arts in the Parks is able to serve many who wouldn’t otherwise participate in a Weber State sponsored program.” Staff and volunteers plan different activities for each day of the week. The week’s program is repeated at each park. During the week of arts, Monday’s focus is storytelling; Tuesdays are for puppets and theater; Wednesdays and Thursdays are music and dance; and Fridays include a visit from the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art’s traveling art truck exhibit. During the week of science, activities will be based on the themes of see it, hear it, build it, move it or feel it. Mondays include work with lenses, magnifying glasses, prisms and infrared cameras; Tuesdays include experiments with telephone cups, stethoscopes and pipes; Wednesdays have circuit building, tornado tubes and aluminum foil boats; Thursdays spinning toys; Fridays have moon sand, instant snow and jelly marbles. Science in the Parks is entering its 12th year, while Arts in the Parks will begin its ninth year. Since the programs began, they have brought science and art learning opportunities directly to the community. The programs have been free to everyone since their inception, thanks to multiple supporters including Weber County RAMP and the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art. Re-Elect the Candidate Who Reflects our Core Values Jazz at the Station Presents Mountain Boogaloo June 13 Jazz at the Station presents Mountain Boogaloo in a free, for-all-ages concert in the Fountain Plaza of Ogden’s Union Station, Wednesday, June 13 at 7:00 p.m. Personnel for this performance: Michael Bigelow - sax; Dan Jonas - trumpet; Kenji Aihara - guitar; Ryan Conger - Hammond organ; Stephen Bigelow drums; and Alex Bedoya - congas. Gathering inspiration from the music of late 60s and early 70s soul-jazz groups, Mountain Boogaloo specializes in Hammond organ-driven groove music in the spirit of Lou Donaldson, Stanley Turrentine, Brother Jack McDuff, Dr. Lonnie Smith, and Grant Green. With percussion, horns, and electric guitar, the band creates mesmerizing textures with a diggable, dance- able beat. Saxophonist/arranger/bandleader Michael Bigelow performs regularly with a wide variety of groups in Utah, joined, whenever possible, by his horn section, the Boogaloo Horns. In 2017 Michael completed his Master’s degree in jazz studies at the University of Utah and toured coast to coast with blues artist Tony Holiday. He is currently writing and arranging music for his debut album of Hammond organdriven soul-jazz to be recorded later this year with Mountain Boogaloo. Enjoy Summer Creativity in Huntsville Square Mountain Arts and Music will once again present Open Arts and Music in Huntsville Square every Thursday throughout the summer (June 21 thru August 30). The weekly event has a kids’ art station run by WSU art education students who guide children in specific art projects; artists bring their artwork in progress to work on and get encouragement and inspiration from other artists and guidance from an art instructor; and there is an open mic for musicians of all abilities to get on stage to share their music. The tables set out in beautiful Huntsville Square are also adorned with watercolor and drawing supplies and our art instructors are there to give instruction on how to get started— even if you’ve never done anything like this before. It is a beautiful relaxed setting where creativity and inspiration surround everyone who enters. Our local art instructors Jennifer Sorenson and Lori Thomas are there to provide instruction and get even rookies started doing art! These great summer activities are free and are supported in part by funds raised through the Community Foundation of Ogden Valley’s Overdrive fundraiser and through a RAMP grant. The Blue Coyote will be open for dinner and the Ogden Valley Smokehouse will be serving its regular BBQ faire. It is a great family evening with something for everyone. The creative juices will be flowing every Thursday evening, starting at 5:30, and continuing until dusk!
