This program runs June 6 thru August 27, for ages 0-12. Read to win prizes, come to exciting events, and have fun with us this summer. Summertime reading means better grades. Studies show that 7 out of 10 children maintain and improve reading and writing skills by participating in a summer reading program. For more information, please call the library at 801-337-2660. Teen Comic Drawings - Enter during June & July. Calling all teens. If you’re into creating graphic novels, video characters, or drawing in general, show off your work this summer at the library. Enter within any of the three categories listed below as many times as you want. All of the artwork will be put on display at the library from July 30 until September 1. There will be prizes for all who participate. Entry Types: • Comic panels. Draw at least a four panel comic strip. • Graphic novel. Draw one to two pages of your story. • Video game character. Design in detail a super hero for a video or computer game. What’s the Word? June 6 - July 31 Aspiring writers aged 12-18, submit your work throughout the summer to win prizes. One winner from each of the following categories will be chosen each week in June and July: Poetry, Fanfiction, Original Fiction, Memoir (What I Did on My Summer Vacation), Nonfiction (research). Over the Rainbow - Second Children’s Summer Reading Program Activity • Tuesday, June 21 @ 10:30 a.m. - Explore the building blocks of art. A story hour for ages 0-5 will be offered simultaneously with the activity at 10:30. Summer Sizzle Concert Series: Ili O’ Polynesia - Thursday, June 23 @ 7:00 p.m. Ili O’ Polynesia is Northern Utah’s premier Polynesian dance studio and troupe who have been performing beautiful traditional Polynesian dance for more than 12 years. They feature authentic dances from many of the islands, including Hawaii, New Zealand, Fiji, Tahiti, and Samoa. Highly skilled and energetic, these dancers will make you feel like you’re sitting on a beach on an island far away! Code Club Level 1 - June 27 to June 30, 2:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. each day. Children in grades 3-6 are invited to learn the basics of coding and create their own electronic game, story, or artwork. This is a series class; please plan on attending all four days. Book Club Discussion Series: Authors in the Neighborhood – Wed., June 1 @ 7:00 p.m. Return to River Bend by Bob Sawatzki Libraries and information will never be the same in this Dewey-Decimal-inspired novel, which follows the staff of the River Bend Library and its evolution into the digital age. This book discussion will also feature selections from The Word from Weber County: A Centennial Anthology of Our Best Writers. Ogden Music Festival Returns for 9th Season Ogden Friends of Acoustic Music (OFOAM) proudly presents the 9th annual Ogden Music Festival, which will be held over the weekend of June 3-5. Weber County’s beautiful Fort Buenaventura will be transformed into a worldclass venue, featuring big names in traditional Americana, folk, and bluegrass music. The festival features plenty of traditional and contemporary bluegrass, folk, and Americana music by national recording artists The Wood Brothers, The Gibson Brothers, Aoife O’Donovan, Mountain Heart, The Brothers Comatose, Trout Steak Revival, and more. Additionally, more than a dozen seasoned local artists will be showcased as “tweeners,” performing short sets between the major acts. The Ogden Music Festival is also host to the Utah State Instrument Championships (USIC) with open and novice divisions in flatpick guitar, banjo, mandolin, and fiddle as well as open division fingerstyle guitar. Winners are eligible to compete at the National Instrument Championships, which take place at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas. The competitions are free and open to the public. Tickets are available online at OFOAM.org. As always, kids 16 and younger are free; otherwise, $65 until June 2; and $70 beginning June 3. Single-day entry to the festival is $30, $35 at the door, and $40 for Saturday only. For more information and pricing, contact Nordic Valley at 801-745-3511 or <nordicvalley.com> Eccles Community Art Center Hosts June Exhibits During June, the Eccles Community Art Center, 2580 Jefferson, Ogden, will exhibit paintings created “En Plein Air” in the Main Gallery and feature paintings by Irene Rampton of Salt lake City in the Carriage House Gallery. A reception in association with Ogden’s Art Stroll will be held Friday, June 3 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. The art exhibits will remain on display through June 27, 2016. The ECAC Plein Air exhibit is competitive; open to regional artists, professionals, and amateurs interested in creating works outdoors— on-site and not in a studio. The exhibit will include original works painted between May 20 and June 1 of this year, within the boundaries of Weber County. The Plein Air Competition boundaries were established for artists to capture the historic architecture of Ogden, and to explore with paint the natural beauty of Weber County. Patrons and art collectors are invited to view these freshly painted works or add one to their private collection. Monetary awards will be presented in both professional and amateur categories.
