This year it took a little over a week to clear the snow off the mountain pass that connects Huntsville to Woodruff, which is located in Rich County. Cuts in some places at the edges of the highway where the snow had been removed were as high as 10 feet. After the machinery completes cutting through the deep snow, Mother Nature takes care of the blacktop’s remaining snow; the pass is reopened after it melts off, courtesy of sunny skies and rising temperatures. For many people, a visit to the dentist every six months is just as routine as changing the oil or rotating the tires on their car. However, new research is showing that touching up the pearly-white smile and getting the free floss and toothbrush aren’t the biggest reason to keep the routine. It is now known that there is a strong and direct correlation between our oral health and the overall health of our bodies. If the “eyes are the window to the soul,” then the mouth may, in fact, be the “window to the wellness of our body.” Scientists have discovered that many major and serious systemic diseases have manifestations in the mouth, including diabetes, leukemia, sleep apnea, certain cancers, and even heart disease. Furthermore, tooth decay and gum disease can contribute to, and complicate, digestive tract issues, acid reflux disease, heart disease, liver disease, as well as disorders of other major organs and joints. A startling fact is that over one in three Utahns do not have dental insurance. Of these uninsured, almost 70% will not receive the regular preventative dental care that has been shown to reduce the risk of both cavities and gum disease. These statistics are extremely troubling to the dentists at Iverson & Burton Dental here in Eden. We have noticed that there are many Valley residents who are in this category of uninsured and untreated. We feel compelled to make a difference and change the statistics for our friends and neighbors here in the Valley. A major factor that keeps uninsured people from getting dental care is the cost. Dental care, like other medical care, can be expensive. The reality is, many of the most expensive and potentially painful dental procedures can be avoided, or fixed in a simple, painless way for a fraction of the cost, if detected and treated early. This is the importance of getting regular routine dental exams. Many people who have dental insurance have it provided as a benefit through their employer. These plans typically include the benefit of two routine visits to the dentist each year to get a cleaning and to have a checkup to look for cavities, gum disease, oral cancer, etc. benefit that helps reduce the patient’s out-ofpocket expense for certain dental procedures like fillings, crowns, and extractions up to a yearly maximum benefit. For people who are self-employed, retired, or not offered dental insurance through work, purchasing dental insurance is often very expensive and many plans offer such limited benefits that they often don’t justify the expensive premiums. We at Iverson & Burton Dental have created a way to help make access to dental care a reality for every Ogden Valley resident by now offering our own in-house dental plan. We are pleased to introduce the Iverson & Burton Dental Savings Club. We feel strongly that our friends and neighbors should have the best dental care possible. The Savings Club is available to everyone and is especially designed to make dental care more affordable and convenient for those who don’t currently have insurance. Membership in the Savings Club includes free dental cleanings and exams (including x-rays and fluoride) two times per year, as well as a major discount on any needed dental work done in our office. In addition, it provides major discounts at select dental specialists including orthodontists, periodontists, and oral surgeons if a referral is required. Unlike many major insurance plans, this plan is simple. Individuals or families sign up for the Club by calling or visiting our office directly. Instead of monthly premiums, there is a modest annual membership fee. There are no waiting periods for treatments, no maximum benefits, and no frustrating red-tape that is common with major insurance plans, just the peace of mind that comes with knowing that they are getting quality dental care and saving money. Having over 30% of our neighbors and friends without dental coverage is a major problem and we feel that it is important for us to be part of the solution. Please come find out more about the Iverson & Burton Dental Savings Club and make a health a priority for yourself, your kids, and our Valley.
