Ogden Valley Branch Library Hosts Chess Club for Youth By Wendy Toliver The Ogden Valley Branch Library hosts the Chess Club, a free program for youth, at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. According to Jessica Whetman, Youth Services Libarian/Assistant Branch Manager, “It’s a safe place for kids to come. They not only learn skills associated with chess, they learn to be good sports. They learn proper etiquette, such as saying ‘thank you’ and shaking hands after each game.” About 30 youth participate in the program. Most are boys in third to fifth grades, but there are about five girls who come regularly and some younger and older students. The kids are matched according to skill level, age, and/or by choice of opponent. They can also play against Whetman, who began playing chess when she was in the second grade. She admits she’s by no means a master, but the kids get a big kick out of trying to beat her. Some participants take the game very seriously and even like to be timed. Fifth grader Elijah Duce says, “I’m really good at chess. Challenge me if you dare!” Fashion, Fun, & Refreshments at this Year’s Annual Fashion Show Fundraiser Chic Style and Diamond Peak will present the Second Annual Fashion Show Fundraiser to benefit Snowcrest Junior High on November 5 at 7:00 p.m. Admission is $5.00. The community is invited to Snowcrest to see the latest fall and winter fashions from Ogden Valley’s clothing boutique Chic Style, and also Diamond Peak Mountain Sports— both located in Eden. Fashion at its finest will be showcased on the runway by fifty local models. Tiny tots and children, teens from Snowcrest and Weber High, and adults and teachers from our Valley schools will all be hitting the runway in super chic styles of the season to raise money for Snowcrest Junior High. “This fashion show is a fun way to bring the community together and raise money for Snowcrest,” said D’Arcy Vandenberg, owner of Chic Style. “There will be the latest fashions along with refreshments and entertainment. We hope everyone will come support this fundraiser and have a good time. This is a fun, entertaining event, and great for the whole family so come and watch.” Diamond Peak will be displaying this year’s hottest sports and winter apparel for boarders, skiers, and anyone else interested in keeping warm and looking great this season. Lori Mortensen from Diamond Peak explains, “Diamond Peak has always carried the latest in winter apparel, and this fashion show will be a different way to present this year’s fashion trends to our locals. In this economy, it is nice to give back to the community that has supported us for sixteen years.” Models will also be sporting fun hair ideas by stylists from Valley Hair. Come see the great new trends for hair this winter. You’ll see everything from last minute ponies and buns to fancy up-dos worthy of a winter dance. These fabulous fashion moments will all be captured by a professional photographer. General admission is just $5.00, and free to anyone age three and under. One hundred percent of the proceeds will benefit Snowcrest Junior High. Any additional donations will be gladly accepted. Everyone will be welcome to some tasty refreshments donated by Eats of Eden. One boy admits he comes for the snacks. “Chess Club is a great way for kids to meet new friends and get to socialize with people they don’t see on a regular basis,” says Whetman, who encourages kids each week to bring friends along. According to second grader Isaac Daniels, “I came with a friend today. A lot of my friends are here and that’s why I like it. I also like it ‘cause I like to learn and do new stuff.” Parents are grateful that the Ogden Valley Branch Library offers Chess Club. “It’s a wonderful program,” says Allexis Owen. “My kids absolutely love it.” The library also offers its popular After School Program at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, where children get to do educational and hands-on creative activities. Young people are encouraged On September 18, Valley Pharmacy held their Grand Reopening celebration.
