Show Volume XV Issue XVI The Ogden Valley news Page August 1, 2008 A Tribute to a Great Man—A tribute to Sherman Hislop The staff of The OGDEN VALLEY NEWS would like to pay special tribute to Sherman (Sherm) LeMoyne Hislop, 85, who passed away June 25, 2008. Raised in Huntsville, the seventh son in a family of ten boys and two girls, his life exemSherman Hislop plified the love of God, family, and country. He was also extremely interested in helping the youth understand the importance of values based on these three principles of love. In part, this is what motivated him to write down many of his experiences and the things he knew to be true. As staff of The OGDEN VALLEY NEWS, we are appreciative of his willingness to share his wealth of wisdom with us and our readers through the past several years. His larger-than-life spirit will be greatly missed. On God, Sherm pleads, “Father, give us saints,” acknowledging the value of a moral society, and wanting all to reap the resulting blessings of such a community. In a poem with this title, “Father Give Us Saints,” he writes: Father, these days we need Saints whose actions are true. Whose hands will serve, Whose minds will seek truth, Who will serve thy cause. [With] the understanding of Saints Truth needs not a judge nor jury. Saints who hold honor Above earthly awards. Saints who place little value to High positions or Demagogues ambitions. Saints who love justice and mercy, And desire all actions be Based on thy ‘two commandments’ “Serve (love) the Lord thy God with All thy heart, mind, and strength” and “Love (serve) thy neighbor as thyself.” Heaven shall then smile, Right shall rule, Justice and mercy shall fill the land “Because of saints thou hast given us.” Sherm loved to share his experiences of growing up in a large family in Ogden Valley, and the many exploits and situations a whole batch of growing, energetic boys can get into given a pound of wide, open space and an ounce of unsupervised attention. While the antics of brothers and friends that Sherm writes about are numerous, from a more somber perspective, he shares the sacrifices his family and brothers made in serving in the U.S. armed forces. Eight of the ten Hislop boys served in World War II. Sherm humorously explained, “To ensure that each branch of the military would have its full share of trouble, [brothers] Fred and Que joined the Army, Dean and Lemoyne the Air Corps, and John the Marines, Lowell and George the Navy, and Wendell the Merchant Marines. During the course of the war, all of the theaters had a Hislop serving here.” They all served in combat except for Sherm, who spent WWII in Texas. Sherm humorously quotes his brother Dean, who claimed, “Texas was worse than some of the theaters!” Sherm also explained the benefit of having so many older brothers in his book “Grandpa’s Stories.” “You should never start a fight with a Hislop, as they always have a bigger brother to finish it. . . . It began when LeMoyne (Sherm) was in second grade. At that age most fights were not fought by size, but by the class in school. But somehow, a fight had started between LeMoyne and a third-grade Shupe boy. LeMoyne’s next older brother, Dean, thought that the match was unfair. He immediately pushed LeMoyne to one side so he could take his place. Dean was one year older than the Shupe boy, so that boy’s older brother replaced him. Then Dean’s older brother, John, replaced him. After John had switched, the Shupe family had run out of boys in school, so John’s cousin, Ken Hislop, took the place of the last Shupe boy. The fight that started between two boys, ages seven and eight, ended up between two Hislop boys, ages fifteen and sixteen.” Sherm’s commentary on the family can best be found in his poem “Where the Heart Is,” which he wrote after serving in the Air Force for 20 years. During that time he was a test pilot and a Command Pilot with over 5,000 hours of flying time. After his last assignment with the Air Force as Chief of Advanced Plans and Mission Analysis with the Space Systems Division in Los Angeles, Sherm retired as a Lt. Colonel in 1964. With all his success in the Air Force and in his church and community, he writes: Roaring aloft. Penetrating the Heavens on Supersonic wings, Twisting, rolling, diving Around towering cumulus, Utilizing machine and skill, Trained to fight and protect. Launching a spacecraft Above earth’s sphere to Hypersonic speeds, Gliding it to mother earth In flame and fire, Accepting the accolades of men For challenging new frontiers. Serving with generals, Dining with senators, Presenting to scientists, Associating with masters, Counseling God’s chosen, Recognized for contributions In plan and in deed. Taking a wife, Together loving, Laughing, crying, sacrificing, Kneeling in prayer. Accepting the greatest of challenges. The ultimate of opportunities— Children. Children to love, to teach, to arm With a shield of righteousness, Fortify with an armor of faith, Motivate to work and serve, Develop a living testimony of God, the Father, and His Son, Jesus Christ. Be medaled for service to country, Honored for scientific accomplishment, Appreciated for advice and counsel, Praised for service to fellow man, But this the most cherished of all— Respected as a neighbor Beloved as a husband Honored as a father Loved as a grandpa He concludes, “One may succeed in many areas but the choicest is in his own family.” Sherm’s obituary states that he was a man with a variety of interests. He graduated from the University of Colorado in Boulder, and later received his Masters Degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He proceeded with a career of military service. His second career was with McDonnell Douglas Corporation where he was the HISLOP cont. on page 12 GO FOR THE GOLD! 8-8-08 Gage Froerer & Assoc. (801)745-4221 GATEWAY TO POWDER MTN.!
