Photo courtesy of Kevin Mikkelsen. A failed fire-suppression sprinkler head inside Eden’s Valley Market created an uproar with hazmat, the health department, and the fire department showing up at the scene. At about 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 13, an employee noticed the leak from the sprinkler, which also set off an alarm at the fire station. Hazmat and health department personnel arrived, later determining that no hazardous material had escaped into the store. Store co-owner Tom Ferguson stated, “The leak occurred in the bakery freezer. All products that were impacted were disposed of. Emergency personnel came and tested and inspected the store as a precautionary measure only. No hazardous material or gases were found.” The store was closed from about 7:45 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., losing between $16,000 and $17,000 in sales and product. Garlactica in Eden—No, it’s not a space ship, but the 1st annual garlic festival in Ogden Valley! Approximately 100 to 150 people gathered on Friday, July 18 at Sandhill Farms in Eden for the first annual garlic festival. It was a beautiful Valley evening enhanced by good food, good music, and peaceful surroundings. Host Pete Rasmussen’s comments? “I am definitely humbled by the large turnout, and to see the interest and engagement within the community for an event that is celebrating a plant. This is a unique thing.” The garlic was harvested by the light of the full moon. When asked if there was any significance to this, Rasmussen said that in studying and reading about indigenous cultures, there are many agricultural practices based around the cycle of the moon. Many believed that harvesting during a full moon would increase the flavor and nutrient value in the garlic bulb. Perhaps not scientifically proven . . . but . . . who knows! Guests at the community event enjoyed live entertainment from the band Chronic Layover, and a buffet of organic dishes cooked, and/or tossed, fresh from the garden. Ogden Valley’s beautiful and peaceful setting provided the perfect ambiance. GARLACTICA cont. on page 8 Friends enjoy Garlactica in Eden.
