Show Volume XV Issue XVI The Ogden Valley news Page August 1, 2008 Announcements Obituaries (cont. from page 6) LaVelle Barlow Bair LaVelle Barlow Bair passed away suddenly July 10, 2008 at his home in Ogden, Utah He was born September 24, 1923 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Preston Scott and Mary LaVelle Bair Barlow Bair. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Carol Harding in Fairview, Idaho September 14, 1946. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls Temple. They were married 38 years and raised seven children and were later divorced. LaVelle was a member of the LDS Church. “Bair,” known by many friends, learned the plumbing trade from his father at an early age. He delivered groceries and plumbing supplies throughout the intermountain west. LaVelle is survived by his children: Margaret (Bunny) Keech Margaret Lund Keech passed away Monday, July 14, 2008 at McKay- Dee Hospital. She was born February 25, 1936 in Ogden, Utah to Heber M. and Florence Paine Margaret Keech Lund. Margaret was reared and educated in Ogden. She graduated from Ogden High School in 1954 and attended Weber State & Utah State Universities, earning her Associates Degree. On September 27, 1963 she married Gerald (Gerry) L. Keech in Ogden, Utah. Bunny lived in many places including Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Belgium. They spent their winters in St. Petersburg Beach, Florida and Melinda Lorraine Blan Some say on the day we are born, we are also assigned the day and time we are to pass away. Melinda Lorraine Galloway Blan, 43, was born April 2, 1965 at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Aurora, Colorado. And on July 9, 2008, met her appointed time and returned home to her Father in Heaven with her family by her side. Melinda was the daughter of Carl and Karen Galloway of Roy, Utah. She had lived in Denver, Washington DC, Hawaii, Guam, Roy, and Ogden with her military family. Melinda was born with a twin nearly three months early and had cerebral palsy. Though confined to a wheelchair, she accomplished schooling, marriage, and, most importantly, motherhood—her amazing achievement. She tried to live her life with smiles, rarely complaining. We all thank her for her example of courage and determination. She graduated from Roy High School in 1983. She attended classes at Weber State Carolyn White, Hurley, NM; Douglas (Kaye) Bair, St. George, UT; Lorraine (Dennis) Porter, Brigham City, UT; Kenneth (Christine) Bair, Huntsville, UT; Wendell Bair, Pflugerville, TX; ShaunaLee Kirkland, Ogden, UT; Sheila (Dean) Carlsen, Layton, UT; his brothers Preston Gale Bair, Sandy, UT; and Nathan Webster, Ogden, UT. Also, his sister Marilyn Griffin, Missoula, MT. LaVelle is also survived by 28 grandchildren and 40 great grandchildren, and his pet kitty. LaVelle is preceded in death by his parents, sister Verna Haggerty of California, daughter Ruelonda, and sweetheart and best friend Betty Detmers. LaVelle will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. A viewing took place at Myers Mortuary of Ogden, 845 Washington Blvd. on Friday, July 18, 2008. Private family services followed. She was active in the Woodbury Booster Club, was a Jayceette, volunteered at Totem Town, and was a Girl Scout Leader. Bunny is survived by her husband Gerald (Gerry); St. Petersburg Beach, Florida and Huntsville, Utah; and daughters Kim A. Decker, Eden Prairie, MN; and Pam L. Keech, Zion Grove, PA. She is also survived by one sister, Ann (Lund) Moyes, Ogden, and 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grand children. Funeral services were held July 17, 2008 at Leavitt’s Mortuary located 836 36th Street in Ogden, Utah. Cremation under the direction of Leavitt’s Mortuary. She was a member of the LDS church with a fervent testimony, and graduated from LDS Seminary. She married Howard Blan July 22, 1989. They have two sons, Daniel, 17; and Kevin, 13. Her sons were her life and joy. Melinda is survived by her husband, sons, parents, and brothers and sisters Kim and Hal Roe, Melanie Anderson (twin), Brenda and Jay Stephensen, Cathy and Torsten Wegner, Greg and Monica Galloway, and Jeff and Reena Galloway; grandmothers Irene Hall and Mercenia Galloway; and 20 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by both grandfathers. Funeral services were held July 15, 2008 at the Lorin Farr LDS 4th Ward, 770 15th St. in Ogden. Interment followed at Evergreen Memorial Park, 100 Monroe, Ogden. Bernice Carter Fredericksburg, Virginia - Bernice Carter died Tuesday, July 15, 2008 in Virginia following a short illness. Born December 25, 1921, she grew up and lived most of her life in Ogden, Utah. On Bernice Carter May 8, 1942 she married Wallace Ray Carter of Huntsville in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They were married for 59 years. Wallace preceded her in death in 2001. Bernice had a very active life. In addition to raising four children, she worked for many years in various management positions at Internal Revenue Service in Ogden, Utah. She worked for the Department of the Navy in Manteca, California. In 1981 she retired from the Federal Civil Service. Following her retirement, she worked at Nordstrom for nine years. In 2007, she moved to Virginia to be closer to her daughters. Burt Ellis Penrod Burt Ellis Penrod was born to Stella Jane Mills and Floyd Alfred Penrod in Liberty, Utah, on December 4, 1933. He died Sunday, July 20, 2008 of injuries sustained in an accident. Burt married his eterBurt Penrod nal sweetheart, Ja Nae Heitz, on a beautiful sunny day, July 14, 1955, in the Logan LDS Temple. He worked for Heitz Heating, Holbrook Heating, Clover Club Potato Chip Co., A.J. Sheet Metal, Western Sheet Metal, A.A. Maycock, and owned Metro Heating for 20 years. Burt retired from the National Guard after 20 years of service. He served a Stake Mission, then he and Ja Nae served two church missions to Ibadan, Nigeria and Phoenix, Durban, South Africa. He held many positions in the LDS church. He loved serving in the Ogden temple for the past seven years. Bernice was very active in the LDS Church. She taught Primary for many years and served as a member of the Primary Stake Board. She was a member of the Ogden 42nd Ward, Ogden 21st Ward, and most recently the Lorin Farr 3rd Ward. Bernice enjoyed sewing, gardening, traveling and visiting with friends. She did volunteer work for the Humane Society. She was an exemplary seamstress and tailor. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her beloved husband Wallace. Surviving are her children: Suzanne Brown and husband Bruce O. Brown of Stafford, VA; Laurie Cournia and husband Jason Cournia of King George, VA; Connie Gross and husband Elmer Gross of Ogden, UT; Gary Carter of Tupelo, MS; and nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Graveside services were held Saturday, July 19 at Lindquist’s Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch, 1718 Combe Road, Ogden, Utah. He treasured his 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Next to the Lord, he loved his family more than anything in the world. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Keith; and a sister-in-law, Darlene. The family extends appreciation to everyone who assisted in transporting and caring for Burt at Ogden Regional Hospital. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 26 at the Roy North Park LDS Ward Chapel, 4275 South 2175 West. Interment, Liberty Cemetery.
