Most of his playtime was with his sister Cleo and Ila before he started to school. He loved to play basketball and spent his time shooting at the rim on the barn. He was on the basketball team in 7th, 8th, and 9th grades at Huntsville Jr. High. He also loved riding his bike “Old Silver.” He enjoyed having his Grandpa and Grandma Smith living next to him. Grandpa could fix anything—from broken toys, bikes, and lawn mowers. One time, he built Larry a little hayrack just like the one they used on the farm. Larry worked on the farm hauling hay to the barn for the winter, hauling peas to the pea vinery, milking cows, and doing all other chores. He graduated from Weber High School in 1952. He worked at Hill Field. He served for two years in the army, from 1954 to 1956. Most of the time he was in Anchorage, Alaska. He then embarked on a civilian career as a radar trackman for the Air Force located in Tacoma, Washington working on radar towers. This took him to many remote mountain peaks where the sites were located. In 1974 he went to Galena, Alaska on the Yukon River Delta for 15 months. It was very remote and cold. For 4½ months it was never warmer than 65 degrees below zero. Larry had many hobbies—boating, snowmobiling, motorcycling, water skiing, fishing, and camping. He said he loved being out on the open water in his large Tally Craft. While living in Tacoma, Washington in Wednesday Taco Night 5-9 p.m. Quesadilla $5.00 Tacos $5.00 Taco Combo $6.00 Taco Salad $5.50 Serving from 5 p.m. till 9 p.m. Expires 8/15/08 1982, he met and married the love of his life, Jeanne Novak. Larry retired in 1984. For the next seven years he and Jeanne lived on their cabin cruiser for five months a year, cruising from Seattle to British Columbia, Canada. The other seven months they traveled coast to coast in their motor home. Jeanne had a great passion for fishing so in 1991 they bought their home in Mesa, Arizona, sold their cabin cruiser, and bought a 17 ft. fishing boat. Each summer they would spend 3 to 4 months in Port McNeil at Alder Bay in the north end of Vancouver Island, Canada. This was their heaven on earth—a very special corner of the world. They would catch salmon, halibut, and crab that supplied them with tasty meals most of the year. Larry loved this area with its abundance of wildlife—sea otters, bald eagles, black bears, deer, and sea birds. They made many friends while staying up there, who would return each year. They invited family to visit with them each summer, including nieces, nephews, and sisters. Everyone had a wonderful time. They all have special memories of Jeanne and Larry and their wonderful hospitality and wanted to go again. They enjoyed their winters in their lovely home in Mesa, Arizona. Their yard was a picture perfect desert yard with cacti and succulents, and doves, quail, and a few pigeons. They loved their neighbors, friends, and members of their ward. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He is survived by his loving wife, and five sisters—Florence (Art) Mumford, Barbara Toombs (Bernell) of Huntsville, Dona (Grant) Thompson, Brigham City, Cleo (Al) Zarek, California, and Ila (Owen, deceased) Berryessa, Ogden. Funeral services were held June 26, 2008 at the Red Mountain Ward in Mesa, Arizona. Funeral arrangements were handled by Mariposa Gardens Funeral Home, Mesa.
